A man has been charged with dangerous driving after allegedly ramming a metal barrier on the Gold Coast which fell on another man, injuring him.
The incident unfolded near Staghorn Avenue, Surfers Paradise about 9pm yesterday.
Police allege a Toyota HiLux utility was seen driving dangerously on the esplanade before coming to a stop near a metal barrier.
The Toyota is alleged to have then been driven deliberately into the barrier, which fell and injured a Labrador man, 40.
Members of the public attempted to restrain the driver, a 31-year-old Surfers Paradise man, but he is alleged to have fled the scene prior to police arrival.
Officers located the driver nearby a short time later.
He sustained a dog bite during the arrest and received medical assistance at the scene before being taken to hospital for treatment.
The 40-year-old man sustained minor injuries and was also taken to hospital.
Meridian Rapid Defense Group general manager Paddy Calvert-Jones, responsible for the barriers, said based on the burnout marks on the road, the driver allegedly kept his foot down to get through.
“The barrier held,” he said.
“The vehicle didn’t get past the gate line.
“Our crew had a replacement gate in place by 12.30am and the precinct was fully protected overnight.”
Investigations are ongoing.
