The opening of Western Sydney Airport is expected to revolutionise travel into and out of Australia’s biggest city, which for the first time has a 24-hour international airport.
But it is fair to say the first 24 hours of operation did not go smoothly for all flyers.
One holidaymaker who disembarked an Air New Zealand flight from Auckland on Monday revealed he thought he had been travelling to Western Australia.
“I got confused, I saw Western Sydney,” he began in a TV interview that has since gone viral.
“I thought it was Western Australia, and I’m meant to be in Perth, but look, it’s still pretty fun, so we’ll make the best of it.
“I realised by the time I got on the flight that that’s not where it was going, but we’ll figure it out.
“I’m on holiday, so it’s not the worst thing.”

The rather laid back traveller was not the only passenger caught out by the State’s new $5.6 billion airport.
Another passenger, Julie Lundmark, said she was unsure where she had landed after arriving on a internal Jetstar flight.
“We landed here and looked out of the window and had no idea where we were,” she said.
There are no direct flights between Perth and Western Sydney International, which had its first commercial flight land and depart on Sunday.
Seven carriers have signed up to operate out of WSI, including Jetstar and Air New Zealand.
