The ongoing Sam Walker saga has taken another turn, with Trent Robinson revealing the superstar halfback is yet to call him since the Roosters officially withdrew their offer to him.

Walker’s immediate future at the Roosters is on shaky ground after the 24-year-old reportedly asked for a slight upgrade to the lucrative new contract the defending premiers put on the table.
That sparked a furious Nick Politis to order the deal be pulled, although Phil Rothfield said on a special edition of NRL 360 on Wednesday that the Roosters supremo was “just about in tears” when he spoke to him on Tuesday.

Politis isn’t the only Roosters powerbroker who Rothfield spoke to, with the veteran rugby league reporter also receiving a phone call from Robinson while he was filming.
So, Rothfield briefly stepped away for five minutes before returning and revealing a surprising development which he said was “almost insulting”.
“I rang him because I thought if anyone can rescue this deal from an impossible situation, it’s Trent Robinson,” Rothfield said.
“I remember last year Nick Politis was going to sack Victor Radley. Robbo presented to the board with so much passion, so much emotion. he was able to overturn it with Nick.
“What really surprised me in the conversation I just had with Trent is he has not heard from Sam Walker since Monday. I find that almost insulting.
“That the young fella could not pick up the telephone to a four-time premier coach who’s had him since he was 17.
“I went to Barcelona and Manchester with that football side, and I don’t think he was shaving yet. He looked like a school kid. Robbo has had so much to do with his education and development as a rugby league player.”

It is a similar point to the one Fox League’s Michael Ennis made on Tuesday, arguing that the relationship between player and coach is important and that there is no guarantee another coach will put their full confidence in Walker like Robinson has.
Veteran Code Sports reporter Peter Badel, who has covered Walker since he was a 16-year-old prodigy, said he “could not believe” that the Roosters halfback had not called Robinson back.
“I’ve known him for nearly 10 years, and he’s one player that I can text and I know he’ll get back to me,” Badel said.
“Even if it’s a courteous can’t talk Pete. I find it staggering that given the fallout, the gravity, how this has become a powder keg over the last 24 hours that Sam hasn’t reached out.
“I know he’s in World Cup camp, but Robbo’s done so much for his career. I thought that would have been one of the key phone calls to make to your coach to say this is where we’re at and this is what’s happened.”
NRL 360 host Braith Anasta said this latest development was the clearest sign yet of a “breakdown” between Walker’s camp and the Roosters, which shouldn’t come as a surprise given both Rothfield and Badel agreed the premiership-winning halfback has played his last game for the club.
In fact, Rothfield revealed that Politis “insists it’s all over” and also posed that same question to coach Robinson who Rothfield claims also conceded it is over.
Although the Roosters coach apparently left the door open to Walker returning by adding that in rugby league “things change by the hour”.

But Rothfield said he got the impression that even if there is a small chance Walker could play for the Roosters again, the per cent is between “one and two”.
“He will not play for the Roosters again,” Rothfield declared.
Badel, meanwhile, maintained that Walker “wants to go back and honour his deal” but agreed he believes the halfback’s time at the Roosters is over.
“I spoke to Nick numerous times over the last 24 hours. I believe it’s done only because of his principle,” Badel said.
“We remember with Latrell Mitchell. In 2020 Nick said they were dithering, they were stuffing around and he said to Latrell, ‘Take the $800,000 season offer, or we’re moving on’. He moved on and he never retracted.”
