Canelo Alvarez ranking the super middleweight division looks less like reality and more like personal nostalgia. Slotting himself at the top while elevating gym mate Jaime Munguia to second proves that familiarity trumped merit. Completely bypassing IBF champion Osleys Iglesias destroys any remaining credibility the list had.
Speaking with DAZN, Canelo put himself first, Munguia second, and Christian Mbilli third. Iglesias got ignored entirely, exposing a ranking system built to protect recognizable names rather than acknowledge the division’s most dangerous threat.
Canelo putting himself at the top of the super middleweight division is pure fantasy. It relies entirely on past reputation rather than what he actually does in the ring today. Looking closely at his run, the foundation itself had glaring omissions.
When Canelo collected four belts back in 2021, he took down Rocky Fielding, Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Plant. He unified against titleholders who played right into his counter-punching style. Meanwhile, David Benavidez spent years as his mandatory challenger and never got the call. David Morrell sat right behind him with exceptional amateur pedigree, heavy hands, and slick movement, yet he was completely frozen out too.
Bypassing the two most dangerous, physical threats during that entire four-year stretch meant the division never saw a definitive king, only a well-protected one. When the division started moving on, Canelo opted for Terence Crawford, a career welterweight approaching forty, and still found himself decisively outboxed over twelve rounds.
Coming back after thirteen months out of the ring and declaring himself king is absurd. His last few outings revealed an aging fighter with flat feet and heavily depleted output. Canelo now relies on single, loaded power punches because he can no longer throw in sustained combinations. Against the killers currently operating around 168 pounds, that style gets picked apart.
Osleys Iglesias is the clearest example of someone Canelo wants no part of. A big southpaw with blistering combinations, explosive power, and sharp angles would turn Canelo into a target.
Christian Mbilli brings a relentless engine, throwing eighty to a hundred punches every round with physical pressure. Canelo gasses out when forced to work every minute of a round, which makes Mbilli an immediate stylistic disaster.
