Sydney Swans star Tom Papley is facing fresh questions after returning a positive preliminary roadside drug test during a police stop in NSW.
The same stop also resulted in a court attendance notice over an allegedly suspended licence linked to an unpaid parking fine.
Papley, one of Sydney’s best-known forwards, was stopped for a roadside licence check on Monday.
In a statement, the club confirmed he was issued with a court attendance notice for “driving with a suspended licence due to non-payment of a parking fine”.
Police also conducted a random drug test during the stop, with the Swans stating the test “returned a positive preliminary test indication”.
A second sample was then taken for further analysis, with those results not expected for at least four weeks.
“Papley immediately advised the Club regarding this matter and the Club subsequently informed the AFL,” the statement read.
Papley, from Bunyip in regional Victoria, joined Sydney as a rookie and has developed into one of the AFL’s leading small forwards since making his debut in 2016.
He was named All-Australian in 2021, has led the Swans’ goalkicking on multiple occasions, and has a family link to the club through his grandfather Max Papley, who played for South Melbourne.
