Jon Jones retired for thirteen days, and then President Donald Trump spoke before Independence Day<\/a>, inspiring the UFC GOAT’s return. But just because Jones is officially back doesn’t mean he’ll automatically receive the honor of fighting at the White House.<\/p>\n

President Trump<\/a> teased plans to host a UFC fight card on the White House lawn for next year’s July 4th Patriot Games festivities. The moment came during a rally at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, where Trump also introduced the new nationally televised sports competition<\/a> for top high school athletes across all 50 states.<\/p>\n

While Jones was immediately inspired to rejoin the sport, UFC<\/a> president Dana White sounded less than thrilled about placing Jones in such a prominent position.<\/p>\n

“I can’t risk putting him in big positions in a big spot and have something go wrong,” White said. Jones clapped back online the following day.<\/p>\n

“I heard the comments made at last night’s press conference. While I was a little disappointed, I’m still in the UFC’s drug testing pool, staying sharp, and continuing to train like a professional. I’ll be ready for whatever comes next,” Jones wrote in a lengthy statement.<\/p>\n

“In a recent interview, I shared that the opportunity to fight at the White House gave me something deeper to fight for\u2014a ‘why’ that goes beyond paychecks or belts. Fighting for my country gives me a greater purpose!” Jones<\/a> finished his statement by reminding everyone of what\u2019s always fueled his drive.<\/p>\n

“The silver lining is knowing the fans see my heart. They see I am ready and willing to take on anyone, to represent my country on a historic stage. For me, it’s never been just about the opponent. I’m chasing legacy, something timeless, something bigger than the moment. So for now, I’ll keep grinding, stay patient, and stay faithful. I’m ready to fight on July 4th.”<\/p>\n

White acknowledged that the idea of having a UFC Octagon on the White House lawn<\/a> is so new that it’s far from a polished reality. He listed several logistical challenges, including whether the lawn could support the 20,000-pound structure.<\/p>\n

With Jones retiring, Aspinall went from interim to official heavyweight champion. UFC fans and White hope Jones’ return fight will be a long-teased “title unification bout,”<\/a> assuming White allows Jones to fight on the card.<\/p>\n

When asked during a recent conversation about the UFC’s most dangerous fighters, White quickly named BMF champion Max Holloway, who just defeated Dustin Poirier during the latter’s retirement fight<\/a> at UFC 318 on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Holloway has headlined 10 UFC cards throughout his career, has had 31 fights in the organization, and has never missed weight or pulled out of a single card. Jones has failed drug tests that affected events 200, 214, and 232. The historic event 200 was initially intended to showcase a heavyweight championship match between Jones and Daniel Cormier.<\/p>\n
