{"id":101007,"date":"2025-08-28T01:34:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T01:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/101007\/"},"modified":"2025-08-28T01:34:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T01:34:09","slug":"ato-whistleblower-richard-boyle-spared-convictions-jail-sentence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/101007\/","title":{"rendered":"ATO whistleblower Richard Boyle spared convictions, jail sentence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australian Taxation Office (ATO) whistleblower Richard Boyle has avoided convictions and a jail sentence, seven years after publicly exposing aggressive debt collection practices at the tax office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The 49-year-old former debt collection officer <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-27\/richard-boyle-pleads-guilty-to-four-charges\/105341326\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105341326\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously pleaded guilty<\/a> in South Australia&#8217;s District Court to four charges, after striking a deal with prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After raising concerns about practices internally at the ATO, he went public with the allegations on the ABC&#8217;s Four Corners program in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The allegations included that his area within the ATO was instructed to use heavy-handed tactics on taxpayers who owed the tax office money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In May, he pleaded guilty to the offences of disclosing protected information to another entity, making a record of protected information, using a listening device to record a private conversation and recording another person&#8217;s tax file number.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The sentencing judge imposed a 12-month good behaviour bond and described his offending as having occurred in &#8220;extenuating circumstances&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An old stone building with a red dome\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/3042cf81c40a27f92d48b72370706df7\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Richard Boyle entered his guilty pleas in South Australia&#8217;s District Court.
