{"id":101642,"date":"2025-08-28T07:46:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T07:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/101642\/"},"modified":"2025-08-28T07:46:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T07:46:09","slug":"boms-spring-forecast-shows-warm-wet-weather-for-most-of-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/101642\/","title":{"rendered":"BOM&#8217;s spring forecast shows warm, wet weather for most of Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is shaping up to be a soggy spring for large parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Bureau of Meteorology&#8217;s (BOM) official long-range outlook for the season, released on Thursday, shows wetter-than-average conditions are favoured for much of the country&#8217;s east.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This is particularly likely for the earlier part of the season, according to BOM senior climatologist Simon Grainger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The strongest chances of above average rainfall are in September and October,&#8221; Dr Grainger said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For November, there are still chances of above-average rainfall, but it&#8217;s more around a 60-65 per cent chance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A colour-coded map of Australia shwoing above average rain for eastern Australia in spring\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/7f634b5918561683d37223859e9bc6b6\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Most of Australia is likely to record above-average rainfall from September to November. (BOM)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Western Australia is the only state to not have shades of blue across the outlook.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Instead, the outlook is showing no clear sign either way following an incredibly wet winter for Perth and the west coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While &#8220;wetter than average&#8221; can mean something as small as just a couple of millimetres above what is normal, there are signs this spring could be particularly wet in parts of Queensland and New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Those states have double to triple the chance of an &#8220;unusually&#8221; wet spring \u2014 particularly during October \u2014 meaning rainfall in the top 20 per cent of all years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rainfall - Chance of being in the highest 20% of the historical range for September to November\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/d11652425d98dfe200d8dd4739f4c055\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">There is a chance for rainfall to be in the highest 20 per cent of the historical range for September to November. (BOM)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The outlook comes as south-eastern Australia braces for a stormy end to winter, with a strong cold front barrelling toward the Great Australian Bite set to bring cold, wet and windy weather to the region as well as snow to low levels over the next few days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Several severe weather warnings have already been issued for South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales for damaging to locally destructive winds and blizzards across alpine areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Meanwhile, spring temperatures are favoured to be warmer than normal for large parts of Australia, particularly at night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This is likely to be related, in part, to the outlook for wetter weather, with cloud cover acting to trap the heat in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Spring daytime temperatures are also predicted to be warmer than normal for northern Australia, as well as Victoria and Tasmania.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A colou-coded map of Australia showing temperatures are likely to be above average in the north, west, and south-east\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/f7210538aa80cad06d7a3b75d6bd9782\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">There is an increased chance of unusually warm days in the far north and south-east. But the drought is not over \u00a0\u2014 it just looks like it..<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Though recent rainfall has helped ease the situation for some, the longer-term rainfall deficiencies across southern SA, Victoria and Tasmania remain largely unchanged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It has prompted the emergency services to warn of an increased risk of bushfires in parts of Victoria this spring, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-27\/afac-national-spring-bushfire-outlook\/105698328\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105698328\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as well as pockets of northern WA.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Towards the south-east of Australia, surface moisture hides deeper drying that has resulted from long-term rainfall deficiencies that have built over the last 12-18 months,&#8221; the AFAC seasonal bushfire outlook said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Some places have reported their lowest ever rainfall during this period. However, winter has changed the fate of much of the South West, with heavy rain falling on the west coast over recent months. (Supplied: John James\/Weather Obsessed)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Meredith Guthrie, a research scientist with WA&#8217;s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), said the hefty winter rain in WA had been &#8220;brilliant&#8221; for many agricultural communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been like returning back to the winters of my youth &#8230; so it&#8217;s just astonishing,&#8221;  Dr Guthrie said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The story is not the same for everyone, however, with parts of the southern and central wheatbelt in WA still much drier than normal.<\/p>\n<p>Major climate driver helps drive rain<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The outlook for a wet spring coincides with the development of a major rain-bearing climate driver forming in waters to the north-west of Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Known as the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), it is often described as the &#8220;cousin&#8221; to the El Ni\u00f1o Oscillation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Changes in ocean temperatures in recent weeks have seen the driver turn toward its wet phase, known as a &#8220;negative&#8221; IOD.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Negative IODs in the past have contributed to most of Australia&#8217;s wettest winters and springs on record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Though it is not yet fully developed, Dr Grainger said it was looking likely to get there over the coming weeks, peaking in October.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve had a build-up of warmer waters to the north-west coast of Australia, and the weather patterns are such that it&#8217;s more favourable then to bring moist tropical air over much of eastern Australia,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-25\/nsw-floods-and-drought-in-australia-south\/105308966\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A land of drought and flooding rains <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">As floods batter some parts of Australia, others are experiencing their worst drought on record. The two extremes may give a glimpse of our future climate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re really seeing there that peak of the IOD that the models are forecasting is really coinciding with that peak of the highest chances of above average rainfall [for] much of eastern Australia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said another part of the climate system that could be playing a role in the wet outlook was ocean temperatures, which were forecast to be warmer than normal for several parts of Australia into spring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So that can certainly act also act as a bit of a source of moisture for rain-bearing systems as well,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It comes after Australia&#8217;s hottest year on record for ocean temperatures between July 2024 and June 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It is shaping up to be a soggy spring for large parts of the country.
