{"id":101994,"date":"2025-08-28T11:01:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T11:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/101994\/"},"modified":"2025-08-28T11:01:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T11:01:07","slug":"new-national-supercomputer-costing-e60m-is-a-priority-says-minister-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/101994\/","title":{"rendered":"New national \u2018supercomputer\u2019 costing \u20ac60m is a priority, says Minister \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Purchasing a new national \u201csupercomputer\u201d, which could cost in the region of \u20ac60 million, is a priority, said Minister for Further Education and Research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/james-lawless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/james-lawless\/\">James Lawless<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish researchers have been renting time on an outsourced computer, which has cost the Government more than \u20ac5 million since December 2023, according to figures from his department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The outsourced arrangement is an interim measure while a departmental panel reviews the cost of purchasing a new one. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The supercomputer is used by the Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC), based at the University of Galway, to run highly complex data processing tasks for clients such as Met \u00c9ireann, the Central Statistics Office and Science Foundation Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Lawless, who holds a master\u2019s in supercomputing, told The Irish Times this week that purchasing a supercomputer is a priority as it would be a \u201csignificant national asset\u201d. The Minister said a spend of \u20ac60 million \u201cwouldn\u2019t be unexpected\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">ICHEC was in June 2022 awarded competitive funding from the European Union for a new supercomputer called CASPIr (Computational Analysis and Simulation Platform for Ireland). <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Lawless said the availability of this funding \u201chas changed over the past 18 months\u201d, but he would seek to \u201cmaximise the drawdown of any available funding from the EU and our own national resources\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His interest in securing a supercomputer was reinforced by a trip in late July to view the world\u2019s biggest supercomputer housed in the RIKEN research centre in Japan, which he described as \u201coff the scale\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The State\u2019s new computer \u201cmay not be in the RIKEN scale, because that is the world\u2019s leading global giant, but it certainly would be worthy of its status\u201d, said Mr Lawless. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The procurement process for the supercomputer could take another year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Over the past 21 months, ICHEC has been renting time on Luxembourg\u2019s supercomputer, called LuxProvide\u2019s MeluXina, which is part of the EU\u2019s network of supercomputers. This arrangement has cost the Government an average of \u20ac1.63 million each year since 2023, the Department of Further Education and Research said in response to queries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Until November 2023, ICHEC researchers were using an Irish supercomputer named Kay. It was decommissioned when the warranty ran out and it became obsolete. Three national supercomputers preceded Kay since ICHEC\u2019s establishment in 2005. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The director of ICHEC, Jean-Christophe Desplat, said high-performance computing is \u201ca cornerstone of modern scientific inquiry, technological advancement and economic competitiveness\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Lawless further expects the national supercomputer to be used for international quantum and AI computing projects. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Enda O\u2019Brien, computational scientist at ICHEC, said the team\u2019s climate simulations, which project future temperatures and weather in Ireland as carbon emissions rise, \u201care very computer intensive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere is constant demand for finer resolution, more physics and larger ensembles &#8230; which means that the demands on computing are just going up proportionally.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In addition to running up costs, computing climate and weather projections on the Luxembourg computer is \u201ca bit of a pain\u201d, said Mr O\u2019Brien. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish centre is allocated a certain amount of computing capacity each month, he said, adding that it is \u201ceasy to run out of that by the 20th of the month\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThen you\u2019re kind of twiddling your thumbs for the last 10 days. And there\u2019s tight limitations on storage and on the file count.
