This configuration allows SNNs to process data in parallel, potentially making them more powerful than conventional supercomputer architectures.<\/p>\n<p>It may also be more energy efficient: artificial neurons enter a brief rest period after each spike, during which they can&#8217;t respond to new inputs. This limits how often they fire, helping to reduce overall power consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers say Darwin Monkey consumes just 2,000 watts of power \u2014 roughly <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk\/guidance\/safety-around-the-home\/home-appliances-ratings\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk\/guidance\/safety-around-the-home\/home-appliances-ratings\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the equivalent of an electric kettle or hairdryer<\/a> \u2014 despite being powered by 960 Darwin III neuromorphic chips, each of which supports up to 2.35 million spiking neurons.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-6e7e559a-bc35-44dd-8675-a6b51e404d66\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Other neuromorphic computers<\/p>\n<p id=\"98959faf-e135-480d-b9bf-b9b942617ddc\">The previous record-holder in neuromorphic computing was <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/technology\/computing\/intel-unveils-largest-ever-ai-neuromorphic-computer-that-mimics-the-human-brain\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/technology\/computing\/intel-unveils-largest-ever-ai-neuromorphic-computer-that-mimics-the-human-brain\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Intel&#8217;s Hala Point system<\/a>, which comprises 1.15 billion artificial neurons and 128 billion artificial synapses distributed over 140,544 processing cores.<\/p>\n<p>Intel claims its system is capable of performing 20 quadrillion operations per second \u2014 or 20 petaops.
