Although the German has been off the grid for three seasons, his two years as a Mercedes reserve have kept him up to date with the sport, with Lowdon confirming the 26-year-old is in the running.<\/p>\n
\u201cMick is great,\u201d Lowdon told Sky Deutschland. \u201cHe\u2019s a very nice guy, I like him a lot. I\u2019ve got to know him better now.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s still young, but he already has Formula 1 experience. Of course, that was a while ago, but he\u2019s kept himself up to date.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is no stranger to the team. He knows where we stand. There are some positive things to say about Mick.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is clearly one of the drivers on the list. But, I should also say that the list is quite long.\u201d<\/p>\n
Schumacher has found a supporter in an unlikely source, his former Haas team principal Steiner.<\/p>\n
The Italian wasn\u2019t shy about voicing his criticism of the German after several big crashes in 2022 and launched a tirade after his in-lap accident in Japan where \u201cnobody else managed to write off a car while they were driving back to the pits\u201d, adding that \u201cit\u2019s just f****** ridiculous\u201d.<\/p>\n
Steiner decided at the end of that season not to renew Schumacher\u2019s contract, saying: \u201cMick can become a good driver, or he\u2019s already a good driver, but he can get better\u2026 But how long does it take us?<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause he\u2019s growing with us, he cannot make us grow.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, after two seasons as a Mercedes driver and two years in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine, Steiner believes Schumacher has grown as a driver sufficiently that he could be the one to help Cadillac grow.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think Mick has a good chance,\u201d the former F1 team boss told RTL.<\/p>\n
\u201cCadillac needs a driver with experience in Formula 1 and there are currently not many drivers who don\u2019t have a job but have already driven Formula 1.\u201d<\/p>\n
Going on to say that Schumacher is a \u201chard worked\u201d and \u201cvery nice person\u201d, Steiner added: \u201cWhen he was a test driver at Mercedes, he didn\u2019t race, but he learned a lot about a good big team.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis knowledge of how a successful team works could help Cadillac.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cadillac could even have two Mercedes drivers in Schumacher and Bottas, who were \u201cboth at Mercedes and learned the same work ethic\u201d said Steiner.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think they\u2019ll take an American driver because the risk is just too great,\u201d he added. \u201cThe guys have no experience in Formula 1 and then it can quickly backfire. That doesn\u2019t help anyone.<\/p>\n
