Spanish actress Ver\u00f3nica Echegui died on Sunday at the age of 42.<\/p>\n

No official cause of death has been confirmed, but she was being treated for cancer, multiple outlets reported.<\/p>\n

Newsweek reached out to Echegui’s representative via email for comment on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Echegui, who was born in Spain in 1983, became a household name in her native country following her performance in the 2006 film My Name Is Juani (Yo soy la Juani), which earned her a Goya Award nomination for Best New Actress. She later gained recognition in Hollywood with 2012’s The Cold Light of Day, starring alongside Bruce Willis, Sigourney Weaver and Henry Cavill.<\/p>\n

Other notable credits to her name include several television series including: Trust, Netflix<\/a>‘s Intimacy and, most recently, the Apple<\/a> TV+ series Love You to Death.<\/p>\n

\n What To Know<\/p>\n

Echegui died on August 24 at Madrid’s 12 de Octubre University Hospital, where she was being treated for cancer<\/a>, according to Variety<\/a> and local news outlet El Pa\u00eds<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Only those closest to her knew she was ill,” Variety reported.<\/p>\n

In Love You to Death, the story follows the lives of Marta (Echegui), who is pregnant, and Ra\u00fal (Joan Amarg\u00f3s), who was recently diagnosed with cancer.<\/p>\n

Ahead of its release in February, Echegui spoke out about the impact an illness can have on both the individual and their families.<\/p>\n

“The series asks many questions about death and life, because it’s impossible to talk about death without talking about life and how you live it,” she said, per the Daily Mail. “I think the people who love you are the only ones who have the courage to say to you: ‘Have you considered whether this is right? Are you happy like this or not?'”<\/p>\n

Spanish actor Antonio Banderas<\/a> shared a tribute to Echegui in a translated Instagram and X post on Monday following her death: “Today Spanish cinema is mourning the death of Veronica Echegui. My condolences to her family, friends.”<\/p>\n

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez posted a translated note on X on Monday: “I was deeply shocked by the news of Ver\u00f3nica Echegui’s passing, an actress with enormous talent and humility who leaves us far too young. My sincere embrace in these such difficult moments for the entire family and friends.”<\/p>\n

Spanish actor Miguel \u00c1ngel Mu\u00f1oz wrote in a translated post on X on Monday: “Your work in Yo soy la Juani really impacted me and I admired you so much. Today I’m left speechless that you’ve passed away. What a sad day today. My deepest condolences to all the family members and closest friends. R.I.P #veronicaechegui.”<\/p>\n

Echegui’s Book of Love co-star Sam Claflin posted to social media, per Variety: “I’m heartbroken hearing the news about the magical @veronicaechegui.
