The move marks the start of a permanent footprint in one of its fastest-growing markets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/technology\/openai-makes-landfall-in-australia-as-chatgpt-booms-20250827-p5mqcu.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a> reports the San Francisco-based firm has already set up an Australian entity and started hiring, although the location of the new office and staffing plans remain under wraps.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI says uptake of its tools has surged locally, with weekly active ChatGPT users in Australia growing 2.5 times in the past year. The country now ranks among the company\u2019s top 10 markets for developers and paying subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia\u2019s government, businesses and world-class developer ecosystem are already shaping the future of AI,\u201d OpenAI chief operating officer Brad Lightcap told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessnewsaustralia.com\/articles\/penai-to-establish-sydney-office.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Business News Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited to expand our presence and build a local team to work closely with partners, customers and the millions of Australians who use ChatGPT daily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-246596\" class=\"size-full wp-image-246596\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Sam2808.jpg\" alt=\"OpenAI CEO Sam Altman\" width=\"800\" height=\"431\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-246596\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">OpenAI CEO Sam Altman<\/p>\n<p>A hub for collaboration<\/p>\n<p>The Sydney office is expected to serve as a focal point for engagement with developers, businesses, policymakers and researchers.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI plans to host events and visits from its executives throughout the year, with early recruitment aimed at technical and support roles for Australian users.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes at a time when governments are weighing how to regulate artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>In Australia, plans for broad AI-specific legislation have been scaled back, with the federal government instead opting to lean on existing frameworks in areas such as privacy and copyright.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Productivity Commission has forecast AI could add $116 billion to the Australian economy over the next decade, provided regulation doesn\u2019t hinder growth.<\/p>\n<p>Partnerships already in play<\/p>\n<p>Even without a local office, OpenAI has already made inroads into the Australian economy.
