A journalist has turned a US Open<\/a> press conference into a \u201csh**show\u201d after asking an utterly bizarre question to the tournament\u2019s No.2 seed<\/a> Iga Swiatek.<\/p>\n

In her second round match, the in-form Swiatiak made a host of errors and lost the second set before regrouping to defeat Dutchwoman Suzan Lamens 6-1 4-6 6-4 at Flushing Meadows.<\/p>\n

It was the Wimbledon winner\u2019s 16th win from 17 matches and she undoubtedly thought a discussion about her form, or the fact that she was stretched by Lamens would follow.<\/p>\n

Sadly, it wasn\u2019t to be with the media conference derailed by a journalist. And Swiatek was stunned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat kind of question is this?\u201d she said in disbelief.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry. \u2018Did you think about putting beads in your hair?\u2019 No. What\u2019s going on here?\u201d<\/p>\n

Swiatek look disgusted and then put her head in her hands.<\/p>\n

The post-game press conference had already become farcical after multiple questions about the confrontation between Jelena Ostapenko and American Taylor Townsend.<\/p>\n

She had also batted off questions about double standards in tennis between men and women, saying she was not comfortable talking \u201cabout the whole of women\u2019s sport\u201d.<\/p>\n

It is unclear if the journalist who asked about beads in the hair had an ulterior motive.<\/p>\n

If he was trying to stir the pot, he certainly did that.<\/p>\n

High-profile journalist journalist Ben Rothenberg was furious.<\/p>\n

\u201cS***show end to Swiatek\u2019s press conference, golly christ,\u201d he said on X (formally Twitter).<\/p>\n

And tennis account Olly Tennis vented: \u201cWHAT IS THIS QUESTION?\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans were also up in arms but also praised Swiatek for how she managed it.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery weird question. Some journalists intentionally bask disingenuous questions to put athletes on the spot. Nice response,\u201d one fan said.<\/p>\n

And another: \u201cThe American media is the enemy of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n

And another: \u201cTennis journalism is in the gutter.\u201d<\/p>\n

And another: \u201cThe level of some journalists has reached rock bottom.\u201d<\/p>\n
