The below numbers compare Tsunoda\u2019s 12 races at Red Bull Racing with the last 18 races of P\u00e9rez\u2019s 2024 season, the period of time in which his results nosedived to the extent the team decided to cut him loose.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Sky Sports F1, P\u00e9rez said Red Bull Racing\u2019s problem is that it\u2019s entirely built around Verstappen and his driving style, which even \u2018fantastic drivers\u2019 struggle to live with.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s just the whole dynamics of the team,\u201d he said. \u201cObviously they have a unique talent over there with Max.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you get there, the development curve they have, it\u2019s very difficult for the second driver that is there to basically adapt to the car.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a very unique car, very unique driving style, that I managed to survive for many years.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut it\u2019s difficult, and it\u2019s the way it works. You\u2019ve seen it with great drivers before my time or even after my time.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think Yuki and Liam, they\u2019ve scored like five points or something like that. It is very difficult, very tricky, and they\u2019re fantastic drivers, but it\u2019s just the way it is to drive it.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just a very unique driving style. Sometimes I could cope with it, I could adapt to it, but as soon as there was a variable \u2014 with the rain, with the wind or something \u2014 it just became undrivable, and then you start making mistakes, one after the other. You are losing confidence.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut mentally I was super strong, and that\u2019s why I survived there for so long. I had a lot of pressure, and a lot of you guys [in the media] were onto me, and now you realise the job I\u2019ve done in that car and that team.\u201d<\/p>\n
P\u00e9rez\u2019s haste to revise history was aided by Verstappen, who was complimentary of his former teammate\u2019s worth to the nascent Cadillac team.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m of course very happy for him that he got a seat,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s a great guy, and we always got along very well. I\u2019m happy to see him back on the grid.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe has driven for a lot of different teams, so he knows a lot about how teams work. Every single team works a little differently \u2014 that\u2019s already a very interesting trait. It\u2019s nice to understand what people are good at or where some teams are worse. That\u2019s how it goes.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlso the behaviour of cars \u2014 he\u2019s been in a lot of different regulations, a lot of different rule sets.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo have that general understanding of how a great car is, how a car is that\u2019s not fantastic, I think it\u2019s very valuable for them to start with.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe has worked with many big teams, so hopefully that will push them forward in the beginning, because it\u2019s never easy to jump into Formula 1 and be competitive straight away. But we\u2019ll see how that goes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Dutchman has long been quietly critical of Red Bull Racing scapegoating his teammates rather than address the car\u2019s fundamental problems, which have bitten hard in 2025 to deny him a chance to defend his four consecutive drivers championship.<\/p>\n
The team\u2019s competitive decline played a role in Horner\u2019s shock dismissal earlier this year.<\/p>\n
Verstappen reiterated that P\u00e9rez shouldn\u2019t be judged for his abysmal second half of the 2024 campaign, when his form was most dire.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a fresh start now,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it\u2019s not about one half of a season \u2014 that doesn\u2019t define what you can do. I think he\u2019s also quite easy in that.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome people maybe dwell on it a bit more, but for Checo, it\u2019s a new start.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe has shown a lot of great things, before he got to Red Bull and during the Red Bull times.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow he\u2019s going to perform will also depend on how good the car is going to be.
