{"id":10404,"date":"2025-07-21T08:13:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T08:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/10404\/"},"modified":"2025-07-21T08:13:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T08:13:15","slug":"gen-z-really-are-the-hardest-to-work-with-even-managers-of-their-own-generation-say-theyre-difficult","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/10404\/","title":{"rendered":"Gen Z really are the hardest to work with\u2014even managers of their own generation say they\u2019re difficult"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s no secret that Gen Z often gets flak for, in the words of the Sister Act star Whoopi Goldberg, not \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/11\/10\/whoopi-goldberg-gen-z-millennials-housing-ladder-american-dreamwork-four-hours-day-lazy\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=advanced_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/11\/10\/whoopi-goldberg-gen-z-millennials-housing-ladder-american-dreamwork-four-hours-day-lazy\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=advanced_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">busting their behinds<\/a>\u201d at work quite like previous generations did.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster complained that Gen Zers don\u2019t show up to work until <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/01\/08\/jodie-foster-gen-z-annoying-to-work-with\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/01\/08\/jodie-foster-gen-z-annoying-to-work-with\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">10:30 a.m.,<\/a> and an MIT interviewer blasted the generation for always <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/11\/15\/mit-interviewer-gen-z-late-research-deadlines\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/11\/15\/mit-interviewer-gen-z-late-research-deadlines\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">\u201cbeing late.\u201d<\/a> And a viral debate popped up when one CEO vented his gripe with a Gen Z job candidate who refused to do a 90-minute task because it \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/04\/29\/gen-z-job-seeker-refused-90-minute-task-recruiter-slammed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/04\/29\/gen-z-job-seeker-refused-90-minute-task-recruiter-slammed\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">looked like a lot of work<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bosses have even started <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/09\/26\/bosses-firing-gen-z-grads-months-after-hiring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/09\/26\/bosses-firing-gen-z-grads-months-after-hiring\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">rapidly firing<\/a> Gen Z employees just months after hiring them, describing many recent grads as \u201cunprepared and unprofessional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not just Gen Xers and baby boomers who have taken stock of how different (or rather, difficult) the youngest generation of workers are. Now even Gen Z hiring managers are complaining about their own generation\u2019s work style.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/resumegenius.com\/blog\/job-hunting\/hiring-trends-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/resumegenius.com\/blog\/job-hunting\/hiring-trends-survey\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">Resume Genius<\/a> asked 625 U.S. hiring managers which generation is the most challenging to work with, and 45% pointed to Gen Z, the generation born between 1997 and 2012. What\u2019s more, 50% of Gen Z hiring managers admitted that their own generation is the most difficult to manage.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps surprisingly, baby boomers\u2014who have been caught in their fair share of criticism too for not being in touch with today\u2019s workers after buying <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/04\/08\/american-comedian-tim-dillon-hypocrisy-baby-boomers-property-advice-gen-z-millennials-mcmansions-retire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/04\/08\/american-comedian-tim-dillon-hypocrisy-baby-boomers-property-advice-gen-z-millennials-mcmansions-retire\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">McMansions in the suburbs<\/a> on one wage and then <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/04\/05\/baby-boomer-late-gen-x-men-unretiring-cant-afford-retirement-standard-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/04\/05\/baby-boomer-late-gen-x-men-unretiring-cant-afford-retirement-standard-life\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">refusing to retire<\/a>\u2014were voted as the easiest to manage.<\/p>\n<p>However, being easy to work with isn\u2019t making the oldest generation of workers any more hirable: In fact, baby boomers were cited as the last people employers expect to hire.<\/p>\n<p>While just 4% of the hiring managers surveyed expect to hire baby boomers in the year ahead, a third admitted they will probably end up hiring Gen Zers.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being the most difficult generation to work with, Gen Z are the second most likely-to-be-hired job candidate of choice. The most popular? Their slightly more seasoned millennial peers (45%).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In comparison, only 14% of the hiring managers surveyed expect to hire Gen X workers in the year ahead.<\/p>\n<p>How to work with Gen Z<\/p>\n<p>The survey didn\u2019t delve into why Gen Z workers are more challenging to work with than their peers, but it\u2019s hard to ignore the fact that latest cohort of workers came of age during the pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not only did Gen Z miss out on major milestone college experiences, from frat parties to literally tossing their graduation caps in the air, but they also didn\u2019t get to taste the world of work through summer internships before diving into the job market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s why employers are now giving graduates extra training to get them up to speed. Take the world\u2019s Big Four consulting firms: <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/deloitte\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/deloitte\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Deloitte<\/a>, PwC, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/kpmg\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/kpmg\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">KPMG<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/ey\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/ey\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">EY<\/a> are all offering incoming junior hires <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/07\/10\/remote-work-gen-z-soft-skills-consulting-kpmg-specialized-training\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/07\/10\/remote-work-gen-z-soft-skills-consulting-kpmg-specialized-training\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">soft-skills training<\/a>, including lessons on how to speak up in meetings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s wholly understandable that students who missed out on face-to-face activities during COVID may now be stronger in certain fields, such as working independently, and less confident in others, such as presentations to groups,\u201d Ian Elliott, the chief people officer at PwC UK, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/05\/03\/covid-era-graduates-training-how-work-office-with-other-people-deloitte-pwc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/05\/03\/covid-era-graduates-training-how-work-office-with-other-people-deloitte-pwc\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">sympathy with young workers.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Plus, COVID-19 isn\u2019t entirely to blame for management\u2019s struggle with Gen Z: As Resume Genius\u2019s survey suggests, workers get easier to manage with age.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While 45% of those surveyed described Gen Z as the most challenging to work with, this dropped to 26% for millennials, 13% for Gen X, and 9% for baby boomers.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, being \u201cdifficult\u201d is probably just another rite of passage. After all, millennials will remember being labeled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2017\/feb\/09\/millennials-lazy-snowflakes-work-young-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2017\/feb\/09\/millennials-lazy-snowflakes-work-young-people\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">work-shy snowflakes<\/a> before climbing the corporate ranks into management and putting the heat on Gen Z.<\/p>\n<p>What do Gen Z want from work?<\/p>\n<p>But instead of trying to wrestle with making the youngest generation of workers easier to manage, the research\u2019s author suggests businesses bend to Gen Z.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGen Z has already shaken things up, but they\u2019re not here to break things: They bring a unique blend of talent and bold ideas that can rejuvenate any workforce,\u201d wrote Geoffrey Scott, senior hiring manager at Resume Genius.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, according to the research, Gen Z managers are most likely to make hiring decisions based on what candidates put down as their \u201chobbies and interests\u201d on their CV, over professional experience.
