Australian tennis<\/a> great Jelena Dokic has had a health scare that saw her sent to hospital after \u201csomething felt off\u201d.<\/p>\n

The former world No.4 went to the Epworth Hospital in Melbourne after coming off-air from Nine\u2019s coverage of the US Open<\/a>, where doctors found a growth in her uterus.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you end up in the emergency room an hour after finishing the day\u2019s US Open coverage,\u201d Dokic wrote in a lengthy Instagram post.<\/p>\n

\u201cThankful that I will be OK. But just wanted to post this as a reminder and caution for our health especially women and our reproductive health.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a pretty big fibroid (non-cancerous growth in my uterus).<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was dismissed as nothing major (a lot of women have it and live with it). Apparently. Whatever that means.<\/p>\n

The 42-year-old said it was a good reminder, particularly for women, to prioritise their health.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd while that can be the case, yes, a lot of cases will also be affected more than others by the size of it, pain, flare ups and bleeding. Which is what happened to me,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will need surgery later this year to remove it. But in the meantime it\u2019s about managing pain, heavy bleeding and flare ups.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all been ok until now but the last few months something felt off. Something wasn\u2019t right.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I want this post to be an important reminder. Follow your instincts and gut feeling. If something feels off, don\u2019t ignore it. Even if it ends up being nothing, it\u2019s better to be safe than something going really wrong later.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo your regular check ups and any kind of even the slightest pain or something out of the ordinary go straight to your doctor. Don\u2019t ignore pain and regular check ups are crucial for early detection and can save your life.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd most importantly never allow anyone to tell you that it\u2019s nothing, how you should be feeling and always get a second opinion and fight for yourself and your health.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know yourself best and if there is pain or something is off and someone dismisses it, go to another person and don\u2019t take no for an answer when it comes to scans, tests and check ups.<\/p>\n
