{"id":106122,"date":"2025-08-30T06:34:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-30T06:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/106122\/"},"modified":"2025-08-30T06:34:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-30T06:34:09","slug":"how-much-can-you-have-in-retirement-assets-and-still-get-a-pension-under-new-rules-from-next-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/106122\/","title":{"rendered":"How much can you have in retirement assets and still get a pension under new rules from next month?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/how-much-age-pension-you-can-get?context=22526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">age pension<\/a> will rise, and the value of assets you can have in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com.au\/retirement-guide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retirement<\/a> while still qualifying for the pension will lift from next month. <\/p>\n<p>The income you can earn while still qualifying for the pension will also rise in <a href=\"https:\/\/ministers.dss.gov.au\/media-releases\/18361\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the next round of indexation changes<\/a> from 20 September. <\/p>\n<p>Single pensioners will receive an extra $29.70\u00a0per fortnight, and couples will receive an extra $22.40 per person under the changes. <\/p>\n<p>This will raise the full pension, with both supplements included, to $1,178.70 per fortnight for singles and $888.50 per partner for couples.<\/p>\n<p>Australians become eligible for the pension when they reach their &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dss.gov.au\/seniors\/benefits-payments\/age-pension\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">retirement age<\/a>&#8216;. If you were born on or after 1 January 1957, that&#8217;s 67. <\/p>\n<p>The pension is subject to assets and income tests. If you own or earn too much, you may only qualify for a part-pension, or no pension.<\/p>\n<p> How much can you own in retirement and still get the pension?  <\/p>\n<p>Australians in retirement will be able to own a greater value of assets from 20 September and still qualify for the pension. <\/p>\n<p>Your home is excluded from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/assets-test-for-age-pension?context=22526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">assets test<\/a>. If you rent your home, you can own a higher value of assets and still qualify for the pension.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/asset-types?context=22526#a3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Assessable assets<\/a> include your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com.au\/definitions\/superannuation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">superannuation<\/a>, ASX shares, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com.au\/investing-education\/how-to-add-international-exposure-to-your-portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">international shares<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com.au\/definitions\/bonds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">bonds<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com.au\/investing-education\/shares-etfs-managed-funds-lics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">managed funds<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com.au\/investing-education\/investing-in-property\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">investment properties<\/a>, and cash at the bank.<\/p>\n<p>For a full pension, single homeowners can own $321,500 in assets (unchanged) and still qualify for the full pension from 20 September. Single non-homeowners can own $579,500 in assets (unchanged) and get the full pension.<\/p>\n<p>Couples who own their homes can have $481,500 in assets (unchanged), and non-homeowners can have $739,500 in assets (unchanged) and still get the full pension. <\/p>\n<p>For a part-pension, the new asset value cut-off point from 20 September for single homeowners will be $714,500.
