Former footballer Dan Gorringe claims he is on a collision course with the AFL<\/a> after his highly amusing \u2014 and at times controversial \u2014 performance in the Legends Game on Thursday night<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gorringe (whose AFL career ended in 2016 after time at Gold Coast<\/a> and Carlton<\/a>) is now a popular podcaster and well known for his amusing antics and explosive blow-ups on AFL issues.<\/p>\n

During the Legends Game \u2014 which had a record crowd of more than 31,000 and was watched by more than 2.3 million Australians on Seven and 7plus Sport<\/a> \u2014 he played the part of a pantomime villain for the All Stars, flipping the bird on several occasions, and at one point flattening comedian Dave Hughes and throwing the ball at him<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For Gorringe it was all theatre and fun, but now he claims he has been fined $7500 by the AFL\u2019s integrity unit … and says he \u201cain\u2019t paying s***\u201d.<\/p>\n

Although his claims appear to be a big joke with the AFL denying any sanctions were issued.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh my god, I didn\u2019t tell you, I\u2019ve been sent an email from legal from the AFL,\u201d Gorringe said on his Dan Does Footy podcast after the game.<\/p>\n

He then read out the supposed email.<\/p>\n

\u201cDear Mr Gorringe, the AFL integrity unit and legal department writes formally to notify you of a breach of the AFL player and official code of conduct arising from your on-field behavior during the Legends Game last night.<\/p>\n

\u201cUpon review of broadcast footage and independent reports, it\u2019s been determined that you engaged in 13 separate instances of making an obscene gesture, the finger, directed towards players, officials and\/or spectators.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis conduct constitutes a clear violation of clause 3.2A: Conduct unbecoming or likely to bring the game into disrepute. Clause 5.1C: Display of offensive gestures during an official AFL match or sanctioned events.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn accordance to the AFL regulation, the following sanctions have been imposed: A financial penalty of $7500 (GST inclusive), payable within 14 business days. A formal warning: any further breaches of similar nature may result in increased financial penalties and\/or suspension from AFL sanctioned activities.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease note that continued failure to adhere to these standards of conduct expected by the AFL undermines integrity the game and the reputation of the league.<\/p>\n

\u201cPayment details attached. If you wish to appeal the decision, you may do so by submitting a written formal request to the AFL tribunal within five business days.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe trust this serves a reminder of the obligations under the AFL rules and regulations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite reading out what sounded like a legit email, the AFL said no fine was issued.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I pay in these (he makes a gesture)? I\u2019m not paying s***. Absolutely not paying s***. Thirteen? I was throwing out a lot. Seven-and-a-half grand. That seems heavy … Baz (Bailey Smith) got 1000 for one,\u201d Gorringe continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo our defence, it was the DDF (Dan Does Footy) crew, that\u2019s our thing … we give each other the finger.\u201d<\/p>\n

The issue of \u2018the bird\u2019 has been a thorny one for the league all season.<\/p>\n

It has handed out several fines to players who have used the one-finger salute during a game, and fined Gold Coast coach Damien Hardwick who was also spotted giving the finger during a game (albeit in his coach\u2019s box).<\/p>\n

In April this year Geelong coach Chris Scott derided the AFL over its willingness to hand out fines.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they see something they don\u2019t like, they punish people,\u201d Scott said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey think it\u2019s good policy to throw out fines left, right and centre.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it a deterrent? I would argue no, it\u2019s not. Does it treat (players) like juveniles? I think it does.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis stuff, it just doesn\u2019t matter. In the modern world, if flipping the bird is just horribly obscene and a shock to people\u2019s senses, then, I don\u2019t know \u2014 that\u2019s not the world I\u2019m living in.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou get a lot more obscene stuff watching music videos on YouTube, I would suggest.\u201d<\/p>\n
