Monday is already September 1, and BAM! \u2013 Labor Day is here, the unofficial end of summer.<\/p>\n

With it, as always, comes a slate of new offerings at the movies, with many titles signaling a subtle shift from popcorn movies to the forward-looking (read: awards-courting) entries of the fall.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not to say there aren\u2019t a fair share of broadly-appealing titles in the mix. Below is a selection of some of the buzziest movies set to hit cineplexes between Labor Day weekend and the middle of November.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Cut\u2019 – Sep 5\"Orlando<\/p>\n

Ever since \u201cRocky,\u201d films focused on the plight of prizefighters have been fodder for trophies come award season. One of the entries this year stars Orlando Bloom<\/a> as a troubled boxer who makes some dangerous choices. Caitr\u00edona Balfe and John Turturro costar.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Conjuring: Last Rites\u2019 – Sep 5\"Patrick<\/p>\n

If you can avert your eyes from this summer\u2019s highly bizarre story<\/a> involving the death of the handler of the Annabelle doll \u2013 a real-life relic from the true stories upon which the \u201cConjuring\u201d franchise is based \u2013 there\u2019s its epic finale. Franchise mainstays Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are back as a pair of historic paranormal investigators facing ever-mounting demonic evil.<\/p>\n

\u2018Twinless\u2019 – Sept 5\"Dylan<\/p>\n

Dylan O Brien, James Sweeney in \u201cTwinless.\u201d – Roadside Attractions<\/p>\n

Judging from the trailer, this modern fable about a pair of young men who connect after they each recently lost their identical twin brothers reads like \u201cDead Ringers\u201d minus the body horror, plus a pair of cute boys, one being Dylan O\u2019Brien. \u201cGilmore Girls\u201d Lauren Graham costars.<\/p>\n

\u2018Spinal Tap II: The End Continues\u2019 – Sep 12<\/p>\n

It has been a while since Christopher Guest last graced us with one of his brilliant satires, in the tradition of \u201cWaiting for Guffman\u201d and \u201cBest in Show\u201d \u2013 and that makes sense, since both of those films are now over 25 years old. Here he brings it back to the beginning with a sequel to 1984\u2019s \u201cThis is Spinal Tap,\u201d the first and arguably most hilarious spoof which he wrote that found massive success.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Long Walk\u2019 – Sep 12\"(from<\/p>\n

This is the first of two Stephen King adaptations coming out this fall, specifically based on novellas he wrote as Richard Bachman, an early pseudonym. \u201cThe Long Walk\u201d tells the grizzly story of boys engaged in a macabre slow race in which you must walk and never stop\u2026 or die. What prize waits at the end of the long walk? Since this is a King adaptation, the answer is more complicated than one might think.<\/p>\n

\u2018Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale\u2019 – Sep 12\"(from)<\/p>\n

It might elicit a gasp and a clutching of pearls to realize that the original \u201cDownton Abbey\u201d series ended almost 10 years ago. That\u2019s not to say that the Granthams and Crawleys et al have been absent in the interim; we\u2019ve had the pleasure of visiting with the Lords and Ladies twice since, in two film sequels. Now a grand finale is upon us in this third film installment, bringing back many franchise regulars such as Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern (regrettably, Maggie Smith, who ruled the roost as the Dowager Countess, passed away in 2024<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\u2018Him\u2019 – Sep 19\"Marlon<\/p>\n

Co-produced by \u201cGet Out\u201d mastermind Jordan Peele, \u201cHim\u201d tells the story of an impressionable young football star who comes under the influence of a former champion whose willingness to make sacrifices for success goes way too far.<\/p>\n

\u2018History of Sound\u2019 – Sep 19\"Josh<\/p>\n

This quiet and brooding period piece follows the secret love story between a World War I-era music prodigy (Paul Mescal) and a gifted student (Joshua O\u2019Connor) who fashions himself into a collector of folksongs. If you haven\u2019t had your fill of either of the two leads by the end of this one, there\u2019s also two more starring O\u2019Connor, \u201cMastermind\u201d in October and \u201cRebuilding\u201d in November, and \u201dHamnet\u201d starring Mescal on Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n

\u2018A Big Bold Beautiful Journey\u2019 – Sept 19\"Colin<\/p>\n

Margot Robbie\u2019s big-screen follow up to 2023\u2019s \u201cBarbie\u201d is this surreal adventure opposite Colin Farrell that sees two strangers stepping through literal doors into other periods in their lives.<\/p>\n

\u2018One Battle After Another\u2019 – Sep 26\"Leonardo<\/p>\n

Paul Thomas Anderson (\u201cMagnolia,\u201d \u201cThere Will Be Blood\u201d) returns with a new opus starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio Del Toro following ex-revolutionaries who reunite to save the daughter of one of their own.<\/p>\n

\u2018Good Boy\u2019 – Oct 3\"Still<\/p>\n

There\u2019s sure to be enough dog lovers and horror movie lovers out there for some considerable overlap for this film. Just in time for spooky season, this haunted house movie \u2013 told from the perspective of man\u2019s best friend \u2013 hopes to attract both crowds.<\/p>\n

\u2018Anemone\u2019 – Oct 3\"Sean<\/p>\n

This Cannes 2025 Palme d\u2019Or-winning film from Iran tells a tale of revenge and potential mistaken identity, with what starts out as a basic kidnapping blossoming into something much more complex.<\/p>\n

This one is sure to be a talker, judging from its polarizing reception at the Venice Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2018Bugonia\u2019 – Oct 31\"Jesse<\/p>\n

Speaking of Oscar buzz, \u201cPoor Things\u201d director Yorgos Lanthimos again teams up with his muse Emma Stone for this bizarre-looking remake of a Korean movie from 2003, \u201cSave the Green Planet,\u201d in which a conspiracy theorist (here played by Jesse Plemons) believes a high-powered female CEO (Stone) is in fact an alien. We are intrigued, to say the least.<\/p>\n

\u2018Predator: Badlands\u2019 – Nov 7\"Elle<\/p>\n

Elle Fanning gives us a change of pace in this latest entry in the sci-fi franchise, playing an android helping a Predator who has been ousted from his clan prepare to fight the ultimate foe.<\/p>\n

This festival favorite stars Jennifer Lawrence (opposite Robert Pattinson) as a mother in a rural setting struggling with psychosis and depression. Based on the title alone, it\u2019s safe to assume this one gets pretty dark.<\/p>\n

\u2018Nuremberg\u2019 – Nov 7\"Russell<\/p>\n

Costarring Rami Malek and Russell Crowe \u2013 the latter as infamous Nazi war criminal Hermann G\u00f6ring \u2013 this historical epic looks at the famed trials of noted Nazi offenders following WWII and a psychiatrist who became involved. Costarring John Slattery, Michael Shannon and \u201cWhite Lotus\u201d star Leo Woodall.<\/p>\n

\u2018I Wish You All The Best\u2019 – Nov 7\"Alexandra<\/p>\n

Alexandra Daddario, Corey Fogelmanis and Cole Sprouse in \u201cI Wish You All the Best.” – Lionsgate<\/p>\n

From Tommy Dorfman, \u201cI Wish You All The Best\u201d follows a trans teen who is kicked out of the house, and the journey of discovery and self-acceptance that follows. Costarring Cole Sprouse, Alexandra Daddario (again of \u201cWhite Lotus\u201d fame) and Lena Dunham.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Running Man\u2019 – Nov 14\"Glen<\/p>\n

The second Stephen King adaptation on this list, this too follows a macabre game that attracts a sinister and enthusiastic audience, but the twist here is that just about anyone can kill the primary contestant. The titular \u201cMan\u201d is played by Glen Powell, after Arnold Schwarzenegger played the role in an earlier adaptation in 1987.<\/p>\n

\u2018Rental Family\u2019 – Nov 21\"Shannon<\/p>\n

Oscar-winner Brendan Fraser (\u201cThe Whale\u201d) stars in this fish-out-of-water tale of a struggling American actor in Tokyo who gets a unique job working for a Japanese \u201crental family\u201d agency, playing various stand-in roles for total strangers.<\/p>\n

\u2018Wicked: For Good\u2019 – Nov 21\"Cynthia<\/p>\n

It\u2019s time to defy gravity, and expectations, as the followup to last year\u2019s hit musical \u201cWicked\u201d<\/a> swoops into theaters. The closing chapter of the adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical, in turn based on the book by Gregory Maguire, tells a darker story that eventually dovetails into the beginning of \u201cThe Wizard of Oz.\u201d Featuring Oscar-nominees Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.<\/p>\n
