{"id":107907,"date":"2025-08-31T02:36:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T02:36:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/107907\/"},"modified":"2025-08-31T02:36:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T02:36:13","slug":"right-to-protest-march-for-australia-rallies-against-mass-migration-draw-support-and-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/107907\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Right to protest\u2019: March for Australia rallies against mass migration draw support and controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nationwide March for Australia protests have attracted significant attention as organisers call for an \u201cend to mass migration\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The protests have been broadly criticised amid concerns about the potential presence of neo-Nazis.<\/p>\n<p>However, many people have also defended the rallies, arguing that participants have genuine concerns about mass migration in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers of the march have called for an \u201cend to mass migration\u201d and expressed concerns about \u201canti-Australian hatred\u201d and \u201cdisintegrating trust\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There is expected to be a heavy police presence as the marches kick off from 12pm at Sydney&#8217;s Belmore Park, Roma Street Parkland in Brisbane and Melbourne&#8217;s Flinders Street Station.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Further March for Australia rallies have been scheduled in Hobart, Darwin and Townsville &#8211; as well as counterprotests in several cities.<\/p>\n<p>Shadow finance minister James Paterson told Sky News Sunday Agenda he had serious concerns about the presence of neo-Nazis at the rallies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m sure there will also be Australians who are not neo-Nazis there today who are sincere in their concerns, but I would encourage Australians to avoid protests,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are not the only protests that have occurred in our country over the last two years that have struck fear in the hearts of some Australians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the pro-Palestinian protests in this county have been deeply distressing \u2026 and have featured the flags and symbols and logos of listed terrorist organisations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailytelegraph.com.au\/news\/nsw\/jewish-groups-blast-burke-over-double-standards-on-protest-response\/news-story\/f7a86232416a080863449fd64f7f942a\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"f7a86232416a080863449fd64f7f942a\" data-tgev-label=\"news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke faced criticism<\/a> earlier in the week for issuing a tough statement against the rallies, given he has never rebuked anti-Israel protests.<\/p>\n<p>Environment Minister Murray Watt told Sunday Agenda that the Albanese government \u201cabsolutely condemns\u201d the March for Australia rallies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#8217;t support rallies like this that are about spreading hate and that are dividing our community. I sincerely hope that there&#8217;s no trouble that arises,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that this is being organised and promoted by neo-Nazi groups tells us everything we need to know about the level of hatred and division that these kinds of rallies are about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Organisers have said the events aim to <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.couriermail.com.au\/news\/queensland\/gladstone\/greens-list-grievances-over-peaceful-gathering-of-proud-aussie-patriots\/news-story\/77e0ea1f090753d703d7f588218de382\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"77e0ea1f090753d703d7f588218de382\" data-tgev-label=\"news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">address concerns about mass migration<\/a>, housing pressures, and the \u201cAustralian way of life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In Sydney, digital creator Bec Freedom, who leads the local rally, has previously instructed supporters to frame the protests as defending \u201cAustralian heritage\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ms <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/nsw\/white-australians-and-neo-nazis-who-s-behind-anti-immigration-rally-20250826-p5mq2w.html\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Freedom was forced to apologise and retract a statement<\/a> she made about the need for violence, after she was grilled by 2GB host Ben Fordham.<\/p>\n<p>In Queensland, ex-ADF serviceman Jason Hoad has promoted the marches as \u201cpeaceful gatherings\u201d led by Australian patriots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe intent is to march and fly our Australian flag with pride and joy for who we are as a nation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are sick of the immigration and third-class treatment we receive, as the everyday, hardworking backbones of our society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though organisers denied links to far-right groups, Thomas Sewell, a self-described neo-Nazi, has confirmed his group will attend some rallies.<\/p>\n<p>Daily Telegraph National Affairs Editor and Sky News Outsiders host James Morrow said the marches were \u201creally just about protesting\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s a big push out there I think to make a case that if you attend a march \u2026 then somehow you&#8217;re racist and you don&#8217;t want any migrants,\u201d he said on Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sky News host Rita Panahi said it was unfair to demonise everyone participating in the rallies because a \u201cdozen idiots showed up and tried to gatecrash this protest\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People are entitled to say, &#8216;We want to have our voices heard,&#8217; when it comes to the issue of mass migration. It&#8217;s a huge issue, it&#8217;s a big issue in western countries,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has urged for calm and respectful behaviour at the anti-immigration protests.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Australia, we protect the right to an opinion and the right to protest. But that must be done peacefully and respectfully,&#8221; Ms Ley said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Queensland MP Bob Katter and Senator Pauline Hanson have backed the marches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should not be ashamed to stand up for the values that have been stripped away,\u201d Ms Hanson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor those Australians that do want to gout there and wave the Aussie flag, good on you.
