Cure has an “invisible” disability and sometimes feels that she is misunderstood.<\/p>\n
“You can’t see I’m disabled unless you’re interacting with me; most of the time it comes off as [me being] rude, or not paying attention,” she said.<\/p>\n
“[It] frustrates me because I feel like I pay the most attention, I try to be the kindest version of myself.”<\/p>\n
Her disability affects her right side, which means she cannot determine how far away the source of a noise is or where it is coming from.<\/p>\n

“Having one ear just makes everything [sound] two-dimensional,” Cure said.<\/p>\n
“I can’t hear depth and that’s one of the things I also struggle with.”<\/p>\n
It has meant she has had to figure out “workarounds” when producing music for her bands, which include Superband as well as Sonnet and the Breadboys.<\/p>\n

In her course at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, all students are taught to “visualise music”, and it is a method that has been a game-changer for Cure.<\/p>\n
“I draw a square out and I map where everything is and where I want everything to sit in terms of the frequency spectrum and then also just physically in the space,” Cure said.<\/p>\n
“For example, I have the drum at the front because I make electronic music, then I’ll have percussion up the top, then off the sides, I’ll have the bass to the right a bit \u2026 everything is visually sitting in the space.”‘More about feeling than hearing’<\/p>\n
When Cure sits down to write or draw music, she often starts with a feeling.<\/p>\n
“It definitely starts with writing \u2014 writing the chords and the lyrics, and that comes from a very emotional place, I always prioritise that,” she said.Loading…<\/p>\n
Emotion is also what propels Cure when she performs.<\/p>\n
“It’s about the connection you have with your audience, about what you’re seeing, your body language \u2026 you just feel it inside of you, you don’t have to hear it,” she said.<\/p>\n

Performing with the Headliners’ Superband, both in the lead-up to and at this year’s Mundi music festival, had also been helpful.<\/p>\n
All band members were part of season one of the show, performed at last year’s Mundi Mundi Bash and were brought together for this year’s bash.<\/p>\n
‘Find your people’<\/p>\n
Cure said performing so closely with other musicians living with disabilities had also been enlightening to the abilities her bandmates had in picking up on subtle cues.<\/p>\n
“I often will not be able to hear myself, but that’s okay \u2026 I have a really good relationship with my bandmates, so we understand all the kind of \u2026 body cues and, like, body language,” she said.<\/p>\n
Cure said for other people who lived with disabilities who were looking to get into the performing arts, community and connection were key.<\/p>\n
“Being alone and feeling like you are the only one, it just sucks and it just destroys your confidence,” she said.<\/p>\n
