{"id":110258,"date":"2025-09-01T06:16:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T06:16:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/110258\/"},"modified":"2025-09-01T06:16:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-01T06:16:14","slug":"dreamworld-expansion-may-be-approved-using-state-government-call-in-powers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/110258\/","title":{"rendered":"Dreamworld expansion may be approved using state government call-in powers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Dreamworld theme park on the Gold Coast could become even bigger if a proposed call-in notice for a development at the site gets the go-ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Queensland&#8217;s Deputy Premier and Planning Minister Jarrod Bleijie announced the proposed call-in on Monday, after a &#8220;direct request&#8221; from Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dreamworld&#8217;s development application was initially lodged with the Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) but its councillors were split on the benefits of the project, which stalled it in the planning phase.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The proposed call-in would take decision-making powers away from the council and put them in the hands of Mr Bleijie.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man ina suit with a  pink and blue tie speaking at a press conference.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/b2ed801997d9a1e0f157760cd20c5cc4\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jarrod Bleijie says there are benefits for the state in Dreamworld&#8217;s proposed development. (ABC News: Lucas Hill)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It means that, as planning minister, I have taken over the direction of the approval process for this actual development,&#8221; Mr Bleijie said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It also means that Dreamworld and the Gold Coast City Council have 20 business days to convince me as to why I should call in this development.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Bleijie said while he was yet to make a decision he had already seen &#8220;many state interests at the heart of the development&#8221; and described it as an &#8220;exciting opportunity&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Hotel and housing<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dreamworld chief executive Greg Yong said the first priority of the development application was a &#8220;world-class family hotel&#8221; adjacent to the existing theme park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Theme park hotels are just a tremendous investment, they do very, very well,&#8221; Mr Yong said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve got Dreamworld here but [there are] other theme parks right around the local area as well that will drive that [hotel].<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There&#8217;s very little hotel accommodation between the northern Gold Coast and Brisbane and \u2026 we&#8217;ve got the Olympics coming and a 30,000-room shortfall in hotel accommodation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man wearing a grey suit smiles at the camera with a Dreamworld sign behind him\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/bb53628fe83c0bb0e77f57996c2e94c0\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Greg Yong says Dreamword&#8217;s first priority is a family hotel. (ABC Gold Coast: Jennifer Huxley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Yong said developing eco-tourism and nature-based tourism spaces into the expanded Dreamworld site was the organisation&#8217;s next priority, followed by a residential housing development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We see some really significant opportunities with the residential crisis that is going on here in south-east Queensland and to help in \u2026 fixing it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Yong could not give exact details on how many homes would be built as part of the proposed development, but said Dreamworld&#8217;s hope was for &#8220;hundreds, if not over 1,000.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What we&#8217;re very mindful of is that [the proposed housing development] is very close to heavy rail, so we see very little in terms of impact on the traffic situation,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Good news and bad news<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Bleijie announced the proposed call-in on the same day he delivered the news that <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-01\/queensland-government-dumps-gold-coast-light-rail-stage-four\/105719168\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105719168\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stage four of the Gold Coast&#8217;s light rail system would not go ahead<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said he received a call from Mr Bleijie early on Monday ahead of both announcements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;He said he had good news and bad news,&#8221; Cr Tate said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mayor Tom Tate\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/a0641c9864f3628f672ba3de059063ba\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tom Tate says he received good and bad news from Jarrod Bleijie on Monday.
