Members of a neo-Nazi group who performed a “distasteful and inappropriate” chant at an anti-immigration rally in Perth at the weekend were not breaking the law, WA Police say.<\/p>\n

March for Australia rallies were held on Sunday across cities and towns nationally, with some counter-demonstrations present.<\/p>\n

The nation-wide event has raised concern from experts about far-right group’s “tactics” in mobilising the public with debates around immigration.<\/a><\/p>\n

Footage from the Perth rally showed people from a neo-Nazi group calling out “heil Australia” in the crowd of about 5,000 people.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the event, One Nation MP Rod Caddies said neo-Nazis were not welcome at the rally.<\/a><\/p>\n

WA Police confirmed they were aware of “distasteful and inappropriate language” used by some of the rally attendees.<\/p>\n

Police said while the reported language was “not currently an offence under the prescribed legislation”, they strongly condemn behaviour which promoted hate or racism.<\/p>\n

What are the rules?<\/p>\n

Displaying Nazi hate symbols and demonstrating a Nazi salute in public is an offence under Western Australian law, after reforms came into effect late last year.<\/p>\n

The two offences carry maximum penalties of five years’ jail, or two years’ jail and a $24,000 dollar fine on summary conviction.<\/p>\n

Police said individuals and groups who may pose a risk to public safety would be monitored and police would intervene if conduct was “criminal in nature”.<\/p>\n

Thirteen move-on notices were issued in relation to the Perth rally and three people are facing charges for incidents during the event.<\/p>\n

Police said an 18-year-old woman was allegedly carrying an edged weapon, and a 39-year-old man was accused of obstructing a public officer.<\/p>\n

Both are due to face court later this month.<\/p>\n

A third person, a 19-year-old man, was issued a court summons for a charge of carrying or possessing an edged weapon.<\/p>\n

‘Campaign of division, hatred’<\/p>\n

There was tension outside Parliament House on Sunday afternoon as organisers attempted to shut down a man dressed all in black holding a megaphone with symbols painted on it.<\/p>\n

Members of the multicultural community describe fear and hurt after the weekend’s anti-immigration demonstrations, while experts raise concerns about far-right groups.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One protester yelled “Nazi” at the man, while a group of men in the crowd also dressed all in black yelled for him to be allowed to speak.<\/p>\n

He led a chant of “heil Australia”, which was echoed by those men.<\/p>\n

One lady in crowd approached the group saying “you’re all Nazi’s aren’t you?”<\/p>\n

“I sure as shit have nothing to do with those people,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Is your Mum proud of you? That’s disgusting.”<\/p>\n

WA Premier Roger Cook condemned the presence of neo-Nazis at the Perth rally and said the marches were a “disgrace”.<\/p>\n

“These people are just simply trying to demonise people in the community as part of some sort of campaign of division and hatred,” he said.<\/p>\n

“They point to issues around housing or population growth as somehow that is the fault of new Australians.”<\/p>\n

Mr Cook said people who walked alongside neo-Nazis at the rally should re-evaluate their position.<\/p>\n

“If your cause aligns with the neo-Nazi movement, you know you’re on the wrong track, stop it,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Stop trying to demonise people in our community and particular groups in our community because that only breeds further hatred, it breeds division, and it breeds racism.”<\/p>\n

The premier said people chanting “heil Australia” was “incredibly offensive”, and was a matter for WA Police, not the state government.<\/p>\n

WA Opposition leader Basil Zempilas said while he was the son of a migrant, migration needed to be “sensible”.<\/p>\n

He also criticised some of the behaviour at rallies.<\/p>\n

“Some of the images that we saw yesterday were not respectful of the community that were around them and, in some cases, did not follow the laws of the land and that’s never acceptable,” he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Zempilas said it was appropriate for police to investigate any footage captured of incidents at the Perth rally.<\/p>\n

“I welcome that because nobody should feel unsafe, nobody should feel threatened and groups that preach some form of hate speak should never be encouraged or welcomed when gathering amongst the population of Western Australia,” he said.<\/p>\n
