Four southern right whales are making a splash off the coast of Perth.<\/p>\n

A pair of mothers and their young calves were spotted swimming just metres off Leighton Beach for a third day in a row on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The group \u2014 all females \u2014 were also spotted near Carnac Island at the weekend.<\/p>\n

WA Parks and Wildlife said it was keeping a \u201cclose eye\u201d on the gentle giants, and said it was not uncommon to see whales frolicking in shallow water.<\/p>\n

\u201cSouthern right whales typically rest in shallow waters with their calves, before continuing their migration to Antarctica,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFemale southern right whales can weigh up to 90t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Videos of the remarkable creatures have surfaced on social media, with the whales slowly gliding through Perth\u2019s calm, crystal-clear water.<\/p>\n

WA Parks and Wildlife said swimmers and boaties must keep a distance of 100m.<\/p>\n

\u201cA vessel must not approach a whale within a distance of 100m, and within an arc of 60 degrees of the whale\u2019s direction of travel or from behind,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a whale interacts with your vessel, remain at a distance of 100m with your motor in neutral or move slowly away at a speed of less than six knots to maintain the 100m distance.<\/p>\n

\u201cVessels must abandon all interaction with a whale at any sign of distress or disturbance.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople in the water should not approach a whale closer than 100m and drones or remotely piloted aircrafts must stay at least 60m from a whale.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Four southern right whales are making a splash off the coast of Perth.
