Andy Aspinall isn\u2019t just Tom Aspinall\u2019s father, he\u2019s also his head coach \/ manager. And while you often see many parental figures in sports pushing their children too hard or even breaking them mentally, it\u2019s clear that Andy only has Tom\u2019s best interests at heart.<\/p>\n
A new video on Tom Aspinall\u2019s YouTube channel follows Andy around for a day, capturing his feelings about his son\u2019s accomplishments. They\u2019re surprisingly down to earth.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I was doing a job, I\u2019d want to be the best at doing the job,\u201d Andy said. \u201cHe\u2019s inherited that trait and he trains really hard and he\u2019s learned a lot. And he\u2019s very good. He deserves it. I think if he was a roofer, I\u2019d hope he\u2019d be a good roofer. If he chose to dig roads, I\u2019d hope he\u2019d enjoy it. Doesn\u2019t really matter. It\u2019s just a job. It\u2019s just just what he does. I don\u2019t think of him any differently at all.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen do you when you\u2019ve made it? How do you know?\u201d he asked. \u201cWhen he retires. He gets out of it healthy. That\u2019s all I\u2019m bothered about. He\u2019s made some money now. He could get out of it now if he wanted to and do something else. He still wants to prove a bit more, and I\u2019m still active enough to keep doing it with him. So when he wants to get out, he can get out.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWon\u2019t bother me if he packs in tomorrow. It\u2019s just what we do together, this. [We\u2019ll] find something else to do together.\u201d<\/p>\n
After a year and a half with the interim belt, Aspinall is finally considered<\/a> the undisputed heavyweight champion. He\u2019ll fight Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 on October 25th, and then? Tom has said he wants to stay active<\/a> to make up for lost time. At 32 years old, he still has a good amount of tread on the tires still.
