Australia apple growers will have easier access to the Canadian export market following trade negotiations between the nations.<\/p>\n

The Department of Agriculture announced on Tuesday that fresh apples could be exported to Canada without fumigation or cold treatment.<\/p>\n

Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Julie Collins said the changes came after several years of negotiations.<\/p>\n

“We welcome this improved access to the Canadian market and the benefits our growers and producers will reap from the agreement,” she said.<\/p>\n

“We continue to work on market access opportunities in all sectors of Australian agriculture and take great pride in being able to facilitate the trade of our world class food and fibre.”<\/p>\n

The announcement comes amid tense trade talks between Canada and the United States<\/a>, its largest apple supplier.<\/p>\n

It is the second major breakthrough for Australian apple growers this year after access to the Chinese market was gained in April<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fruit Growers Victoria services manager Michael Crisera said expanded market access was always good news for growers.<\/p>\n

“I think both of these deals are going to help our growers,” Mr Crisera said.<\/p>\n

“Not many growers like to fumigate fruit before they export, but now it’s a lot more viable to export to Canada.”<\/p>\n

Canada grows more than 370,000 tonnes of apples each year, mostly in Ontario and Quebec.<\/p>\n

Australia produces close to 300,000 tonnes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I expect to see small amounts of apples go over, but you really don’t know \u2014 it depends on what the customers want,” Mr Crisera said.<\/p>\n

He said he was seeing global trading partners “reshuffle” following Donald Trump’s announcement of widespread tariffs.<\/p>\n

“There’s a lot of countries that never had market access to certain countries \u2014 all of a sudden they do now,” Mr Crisera said.<\/p>\n

He said Australia was expected to compete with growers in South Africa and Chile for small portions of larger export markets.<\/p>\n

“I think we will see a lot more countries from the Southern Hemisphere competing, unfortunately,” Mr Crisea said.<\/p>\n

“China is one of the largest apple growers in the world \u2014 they grow over 43 million tonnes, whereas we grow about 280,000 tonnes.<\/p>\n

“Total imports into China last year were around 100,000 tonnes of apples \u2014 so it’s not a big amount, but it creates an option for growers to balance an over supply in some years.”<\/p>\n
