The year is 1947 and Qantas has just launched its first “all Qantas<\/a>” service from Sydney to London<\/a> aboard its freshly acquired Lockheed Constellation planes.<\/p>\n

Referred to as the “Kangaroo Route,” this is no ordinary point A to point B journey. Taking four days, it includes layovers in Darwin, Singapore, Calcutta (now Kolkata), Karachi, Cairo and Tripoli before arriving in the UK capital.<\/p>\n

Now the “hallmark” Qantas<\/a> journey is being recreated \ufeffby luxury travel operator Captain’s Choice, who have launched a new 14-day tour called the “Pioneering Spirit of the Kangaroo Route.<\/a>“<\/p>\n

“It is an absolute milestone. It’s been years in the making, and COVID unfortunately put a stop to our first run, ” Captain’s Choice CEO Bas Bosschieter told the Today show.<\/p>\n

“The hallmark of Qantas was connecting Australia to Europe and we just want to go back and do that once again.”<\/p>\n

Qantas has been flying internationally for 90 years <\/p>\n

Taking off on February 3, 2026, it will follow a similar flight path as the one Qantas first wholly operated in 1947, promising guests “a journey born of nostalgia, yet one enhanced by the conveniences of the modern era.”<\/p>\n

Passengers will fly on a chartered Qantas Airbus A330-300, making stops in Darwin, Singapore, Kolkata, Colombo, Cairo, Toulouse and Rome, staying in luxury hotels and experiencing the highlights of each destination along the way.<\/p>\n

“There are so many highlights,” former Qantas captain Greg Fitzgerald told Today.<\/p>\n

“But I would have to say from an aviation point of view the last day of flying, where we are coming off a private diner and a tour of the Vatican, and we go straight onto the plane to fly to London, but on the way we’re calling into Toulouse.<\/p>\n

“It wasn’t on the original route, but it is the home of the Airbus factory and were visiting that to see the new A350-1000, that’s the aircraft Qantas is going to use to fly Sydney direct to London from early 2027.”<\/p>\n

Back then the plane only held 29 passengers, alongside three pilots, one navigator, one radio operator, two flight engineers and three cabin crew.<\/p>\n

The price? A whopping \u00a3525, which would amount to around \u00a317,400 (about $37,500) in 2025, according to the Bank of England’s inflation calculator.<\/p>\n

This particular trip will set you back a bit more than that – the price starts at $49,950 per person but does include all meals, drinks, hotels, tours, transfers, tips and, of course, flights.<\/p>\n
