As the season dragged on without any movement from Penske, Power\u2019s departure became more and more obvious.<\/p>\n
He showed up at the season-opener in March \u2014 on his birthday weekend \u2014 facing questions about the possibility of 23-year-old David Malukas replacing him at the end of the year.<\/p>\n
The speculation was never silenced by Team Penske, but Malukas was not confirmed as Power\u2019s replacement Tuesday.<\/p>\n
After Sunday\u2019s season finale at Nashville Superspeedway, Power was both reflective and grateful for the time he\u2019d had at Penske, where he won 42 races, two championships, the Indy 500 and became IndyCar\u2019s all-time pole-winner with 71.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been the honour of my life to drive for Roger and the Penske organisation,\u201d Power said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have accomplished so much together, and I will always be grateful for my time with the team and my teammates who have supported me along the way.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter much consideration, I felt like a change for me was the right move at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Prominent F1 identity turned IndyCar commentator Will Buxton called out the Penske decision to spin the departure as Power\u2019s choice.<\/p>\n
\u201cFascinating framing the choice as belonging to a driver who as of Sunday was still awaiting a meeting to be informed of his fate,\u201d he rote.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhatever ultimately led to this moment, someone will end up getting one hell of a driver, and Penske left with an almighty hole to fill.\u201d<\/p>\n
Power, with 45 career victories, ranks fourth on the all-time IndyCar wins list behind AJ Foyt (67), Scott Dixon (59) and Mario Andretti (52). He passed Andretti as the greatest qualifier in series history.<\/p>\n
This season, he proved to be the best of the trio of Penske drivers \u2014 he was most consistent, his win at Portland was the first of the season for Penske \u2014 and he\u2019s shown despite his age he\u2019s still among the most competitive on the grid.<\/p>\n
Power was leading at Nashville and had positioned himself for the win until a mistake in the pits took him out of contention.<\/p>\n
He told his engineer on pit lane after the race he wasn\u2019t returning in 2026 in a conversation that had both engineer David Faustino and Power\u2019s wife Liz in tears.<\/p>\n
Power has won at least one race every season except 2023 \u2014 the year his wife nearly died from a staph infection.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s not clear where Power will go, but the softest landing spot on the grid would be if Colton Herta leaves IndyCar for F2, the Formula 1 feeder system, in an effort to achieve the super license Herta needs to compete for the new Cadillac team in the global series.<\/p>\n
That would open a seat at Andretti Global and new owner Dan Towriss, who also owns the Cadillac F1 team, a NASCAR team and multiple other organisations in various motorsports series, could use a veteran like Power as he attempts to bring the IndyCar program back to the top of the series.<\/p>\n
Supercars great Scott McLaughlin paid tribute to Power after the Penske announcement.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you Will. I never thought I\u2019d end up teammates with a true motorsport legend but this crazy journey brought me there,\u201d McLaughlin wrote.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have enjoyed learning from you and trying to hone my craft to be as a precise as you are. I\u2019ve still got a ways to go but I will always cherish the time we spent working together.<\/p>\n
