After a lengthy summer hiatus, Jimmy Kimmel returned to \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d on Tuesday, with the host using his opening monologue to dive into all of the news that happened while he was away.<\/p>\n
From talks of hosting UFC fights at the White House<\/a> to the overhaul of the Kennedy Center<\/a>, Kimmel reviewed a long list of items involving President Donald Trump that made headlines over the past two months. The late-night host admitted that the deluge of stories made it hard for him to ignore the news during his break.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s like Ultron, he just keeps going,\u201d Kimmel told the crowd. \u201cEvery day it\u2019s something crazier than the next.\u201d<\/p>\n Kimmel also used his monologue on Tuesday to comment on CBS announcing in July<\/a> that it was canceling \u201cThe Late Show With Stephen Colbert.\u201d Kimmel revealed that the \u201cNo. 1 thing\u201d people asked him about over the summer was what happened to his fellow late-night host.<\/p>\n Although CBS called the cancellation \u201cpurely a financial decision,\u201d the announcement came just days after Colbert poked fun on his show at CBS parent company Paramount for settling a $16 million lawsuit with President Trump over a \u201c60 Minutes\u201d story. Later in July, federal regulators approved a $8 billion merger deal<\/a> between Paramount and Skydance Media.<\/p>\n \u201cCBS, all of a sudden out of the blue, claimed \u2018The Late Show\u2019 was losing $40 million a year, and then miraculously got FCC approval to sell their company, which is what they wanted,\u201d Kimmel said. <\/p>\n Kimmel went on to share Trump\u2019s reaction to the Colbert cancellation, with the president also taking aim at Kimmel and \u201cTonight Show\u201d host Jimmy Fallon in a Truth Social post in July. Trump wrote that the comedians would be next on the chopping block in the \u201cuntalented Late Night Sweepstakes\u201d and that he hoped he \u201cplayed a major part\u201d in Colbert\u2019s show ending.<\/p>\n Kimmel called the post \u201calarming\u201d and criticized the president for being \u201cdelicate.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cDid we hurt your feelings?\u201d Kimmel said. \u201cYou want us to be canceled because we make jokes about you? I thought you were against cancel culture?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhen did you become so woke?\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Kimmel said that \u201cthe only place we are going is to New York,\u201d revealing that his show will once again set up shop in the Big Apple for a week of tapings at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The episodes will air the week of Sept. 29, with Colbert slated to be a guest during the New York shows.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have a lot to talk about,\u201d Kimmel said. \u201cIf you\u2019re the White House intern in charge of strategically unplugging the president\u2019s TV, that\u2019ll be a good night to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, over on \u201cThe Late Show,\u201d Colbert chatted with guest John Oliver on Tuesday night. The pair shared a toast over Colbert\u2019s new Funko Pop figurine and Oliver\u2019s 21st guest appearance on the show, with the comedians also using the moment to quip about the state of late-night TV.<\/p>\n \u201cTo late-night shows,\u201d Colbert said while raising his glass, before the comedians said in unison, \u201cwhile supplies last.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
