Tens of thousands of documents related to the investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his death in prison have been released by a US House of Representatives committee<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Footage of police searches inside Epstein’s home, witness and victim interview tapes, and flight logs were among the swathes of files posted on Google Drive.<\/p>\n

Still, most of the files contain information already publicly known or available. And it was also only a tiny fraction of the files the US Department of Justice is believed to hold.<\/p>\n

Here’s what we know.<\/p>\n

What was in the drop \u2014 and what’s new?Interview tapes<\/p>\n

The trove of material included several videos of apparent police interviews with victims, time-stamped to have taken place between 2005 and 2006.<\/p>\n

In one video, a girl whose face was blurred said Epstein paid her $US350 for a massage and sex when she was 17 years old.<\/p>\n

“He has the girls take off their clothes and give him a massage,” she said in the 17-minute video.<\/p>\n

Other files contained audio recordings from the criminal investigation of Epstein in Florida, including with victims whose names and dates of birth were edited out.<\/p>\n

When asked by an investigator what “the most you ever made from him” was, a victim describes receiving more than $1,000, among other gifts.<\/p>\n

In another audio recording, an employee of Epstein tells law enforcement, “there were a lot of girls that were very, very young” visiting the financier’s home, but he couldn’t confirm whether they were minors.<\/p>\n

He said he was employed to clean a room where Epstein had massages twice daily.<\/p>\n

Over the course of Epstein’s visits to the home, the man said, more than a dozen girls might visit.<\/p>\n

Search of Epstein’s home<\/p>\n

Almost an hour of police footage showed investigators walking through a property owned by Epstein.<\/p>\n

A photo of the financier with Ghislaine Maxwell on a grassy hill was displayed on a panelled living room wall.<\/p>\n

Art depicting naked women adorned the walls of a bedroom and hallway upstairs.<\/p>\n

The investigator recording the footage did not speak throughout the walk-through, but at times paused to zoom in on items neatly organised on tabletops and bookshelves.<\/p>\n

Later, a second investigator fanned out a pile of papers on a desk. While the text was mostly illegible, block letters at the top of the sheets read: “PALM BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT PROPERTY RECEIPT”.<\/p>\n

Flight logs<\/p>\n

Of the text documents, Democrats claim the only new information was a list of flight logs from Customs and Border Protection.<\/p>\n

The documents chronicled Epstein’s travel from destinations such as Paris, New York and the Virgin Islands between 2000 and 2013.<\/p>\n

They do not include the names of any passengers on board his private jet.<\/p>\n

The ‘missing minute’<\/p>\n

Another file contained CCTV footage recorded in the hallway outside Epstein’s jail cell on the night he died. It was about two hours longer than the video released by the US Department of Justice in July.<\/p>\n

It included the so-called “missing minute”<\/a> \u2014 a jump in the on-screen time-stamp in the footage first released in July, which cut from 23:58:58 to 00:00:00.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The cut led commentators to suggest the video had been doctored, fuelling conspiracy theories of a cover-up of Epstein’s death.<\/p>\n

Ms Bondi said previously the gap was caused by the prison’s surveillance system resetting each night.<\/p>\n

For those who believe the government withheld information and documents to cover up the guilt of high-profile associates of Epstein, the drop has not answered any questions.<\/p>\n

Republicans have been accused of withholding a “client list” that details associates to whom Epstein trafficked victims.<\/p>\n

The Epstein drop contains ‘nothing new’<\/a><\/p>\n

After weeks of growing pressure, the US House Committee has released part of the Epstein files. But it’s unlikely to give people the answers they were hoping for.<\/p>\n

The US Department of Justice maintains that no such list exists.<\/p>\n

But commentators have frequently disputed this suggestion, citing a Fox News interview from February, in which Attorney-General Pam Bondi appeared to claim she had a client list<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“To the American people \u2014 don’t let this fool you,” said Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, in a statement.<\/p>\n

“House Republicans are trying to make a spectacle of releasing already-public documents.<\/p>\n

“Pam Bondi has said the client list was on her desk. She could release it right now if she wanted to.”<\/p>\n

It’s not clear what the release of additional files could include.<\/p>\n

How much more is to come?<\/p>\n

The files released today were just a fraction of those held by the US Department of Justice.<\/p>\n

While the Oversight Committee has subpoenaed all the files, only about 1 per cent have been turned over.<\/p>\n

Politicians are currently pushing a law that would require the Department of Justice to publish more files.<\/p>\n

Democrats lined up in the House chamber on Tuesday evening to sign a petition from Kentucky Republican Thomas Massie that, if successful, would force a vote on the bill.<\/p>\n

If the vote goes ahead, the legislation would still need to be passed by the Senate and signed into law by US President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

“We continue to bring the pressure,” Mr Garcia told reporters.<\/p>\n
