He didn\u2019t have a mobile phone for the first three months after he left and still to this day \u2014 six years later \u2014 he doesn\u2019t use social media.<\/p>\n
The Greg Inglis Instagram account that has over 250,000 followers is run by his business managers.<\/p>\n
The 38-year-old knows better than to subject himself to the negativity and toxicity that circulates on social media. <\/p>\n
He\u2019s also learnt about the importance of structure, which is why he\u2019s so pleased to see current NRL players undergoing courses and further education to better prepare them for life beyond the footy field. <\/p>\n
\u201cMy biggest thing to help me get back is to stick to a daily routine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had played for 16-odd years and all of a sudden you stop \u2013 it just can\u2019t happen. It doesn\u2019t matter what business you\u2019re in or what you\u2019re doing in life, if you\u2019ve done it for so long, try and have some form of normality in your life afterwards.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inglis was diagnosed with anxiety, depression and bipolar II disorder in the months following his retirement. The diagnosis gave him the clarity he didn\u2019t even know he had been seeking. <\/p>\n
\u201cMy outlet and the way I got through it was football,\u201d Inglis said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI could be at home and just have a crap day, not really knowing my emotions but I\u2019d turn up to training and be totally different \u2014 up and bubbly doing what I love. Then some days I wouldn\u2019t feel up and I\u2019d just put it down to being tired from training.<\/p>\n
\u201cI found out it was always there, even in my earlier years, but I just learnt how to mask it. <\/p>\n
\u201cGoing back and thinking about it, having the proper diagnosis was an aha moment. That\u2019s why I encourage people, if you don\u2019t know how or what you\u2019re feeling, go seek professional help. <\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with you \u2014 we\u2019re just all wired differently.\u201d<\/p>\n
Inglis has been very open and honest about his mental health journey over the last five or so years. In fact, he seems to be more comfortable talking about that than his NRL achievements. <\/p>\n
But that vulnerability hasn\u2019t always been there. Mental health was very much a taboo subject when Inglis was playing.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt just wasn\u2019t spoken about,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Why?<\/p>\n
\u201cMen\u2019s environment, testosterone, wanting the biggest flex \u2014 \u2018nothing\u2019s wrong with me\u2019 \u2014 or thinking nobody wants so listen to it,\u201d Inglis added with a shrug.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut it\u2019s getting to the point now where we\u2019re seeing far too many deaths through suicide and we\u2019re not actioning anything \u2014 we\u2019re just reacting to it. <\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s what Goanna Academy is about \u2014 it\u2019s preventative. We go around and give people the tools so they know how to cope or how to help someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n
These days Inglis is kept busy delivering programs to schools and within the community with the Goanna Academy. He\u2019s also a mentor to young Indigenous men, including Wests Tigers fullback Jahream Bula.<\/p>\n
It was that relationship that led to Inglis joining the club\u2019s NRLW staff as an assistant coach \u2014 something he never expected to dive into. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m loving it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt breaks up the work that I\u2019m doing… from having those tough conversations about mental health to helping grow our women\u2019s game.\u201d<\/p>\n
