numbers

Multiple advocates and researchers the ABC spoke to had the same message: “It’s just the tip of the iceberg.”

Karen Bevan, chief executive of sexual and domestic violence support service Full Stop, said those who did report faced an “inadequate and often harmful” experience.

“So for me [the data] says a lot of things about the incredible bravery and courage of victim-survivors who do report,” she said.

“But it also says a lot about our absolute failing as a country to come to grips with the significant numbers of people who’ve been subject to rape and sexual assaults.”

She added the rate of young people recorded was also consistent with what their organisation was seeing on the ground.

“Our largest single age cohort of calls come from under-25 year olds, so that’s who’s calling the sexual violence helpline here in NSW,” she said.

“These statistics, in some ways they’re just another year of disappointing and really disturbing reading.

“They’re also a really strong call for us to say we have to respond and support victim-survivors, whether it be through recovery and healing [or] through the court system and in our community.”

Predator’s paradise

An ABC investigation has uncovered hundreds of allegations of sexual harassment and assault at the hands of driving instructors. Warning: graphic content detailing alleged sexual assault.

Madeleine Clifford, executive officer of the National Association of Services Against Sexual Violence, said the numbers were not surprising.

“The rates of sexual violence in this country are just absolutely horrific,” she told the ABC.

“The president of the Australian Law Reform Commission describes sexual violence as a social problem that is out of control, and we agree.

“Sexual violence is absolutely preventable, but to prevent it we need to invest in strategies that aim to prevent but also intervene early.”

She said it was important to note “reporting rates are really low”.

“It’s really only around 8 per cent of victim-survivors [who] will report sexual violence to police,” she said.

“So that indicates that around 92 per cent of victim-survivors don’t report … I would hesitate to say that [the increase] is purely people coming forward because they feel more confident in reporting.

“Sexual violence encompasses many different forms, not just sexual assault. Sexual harassment, trafficking, exploitation, child sexual abuse.

“So as devastating as this figure is, it really is probably only at the conservative end of what people are actually experiencing.”Thefts, homicides also increase

Sexual assault was not the only offence that saw an increase, according to the ABS.

The number of theft victims recorded by police also rose to its highest level since 2003, increasing by 6 per cent in a year.

ABS head of crime and justice statistics Samantha Hall said there were 595,660 recorded victims of theft in 2024, excluding theft of motor vehicles.

“These thefts, which include things like shoplifting and pick-pocketing … have been continually rising since a drop during 2020 when COVID-19 restrictions were introduced,” she said.

“The largest rise over the past year was in Victoria, up 29 per cent, followed by Tasmania, which rose by 11 per cent.

“Thefts at retail locations rose from 32 per cent of all thefts in 2010 to 45 per cent in 2024.

“Meanwhile, thefts from residential locations have dropped from 30 to 25 per cent of all thefts over the same period.”

There were also 448 victims of homicide and related offences nationally in 2024, an increase of 9 per cent or 37 victims from 2023.

A total 63 per cent of victims were male and 21 per cent were aged between 15 and 34 years old.

Almost two-fifths or 175 reports were related to family and domestic violence (FDV) incidents.

This was an increase of 14 victims from the previous year, with 99 of them being female.

At least two in five assaults recorded in selected states and territories were also related to FDV incidents.

The number of sexual assaults recorded by police has surpassed 40,000 nationwide in 2024, the highest rate in…

[4
3131,64,63,82738,82739,44,6671,82737
post-116949","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-australia","tag-abs","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-crime-data","tag-crime-rates","tag-news","tag-sexual-assault","tag-victim-survivors
["GET
