David Byrne and Hayley Williams<\/a> ask a lot of questions in their new track, \u201cWhat Is The Reason For It?\u201d Together, they sing, \u201cDoes it do something useful? What is it for? Is everyone else the same as me?\u201d Who knows. One thing that\u2019s not up for debate? How fun and fruitful this partnership continues to be. Williams and Byrne first met around the time A24 re-rerelased Talking Heads\u2019 seminal concert film Stop Making Sense<\/a> in 2023. Williams\u2019 band Paramore was one of several artists to cover a Talking Heads song for the studio\u2019s companion album, Everyone\u2019s Getting Involved<\/a>. Soon after, Byrne reciprocated by covering Paramore\u2019s After Laughter track \u201cHard Times<\/a>,\u201d and a new friendship was formed. Speaking with People<\/a> about \u201cWhat Is The Reason For It?,\u201d which will appear on his forthcoming album Who Is The Sky?<\/a>, Byrne said the following: \u201cI knew that [Williams] was in town, so I just texted her and said, \u2018Do you want to come by and sing on this?\u2019 And she said yes\u2026 And she killed it.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is a pretty once in a lifetime week for Byrne. His album\u2014which also features contributions from St. Vincent and Tom Skinner of The Smile<\/a>\u2014comes out this Friday. He also announced on his Instagram story that he was getting married to his partner Mala Gaonkar. It\u2019s been less than three weeks since the couple shared the news of their engagement<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m getting married this week and made an almost entirely instrumental playlist while our guests eat an amazing and spicy dinner,\u201d he wrote alongside links to said playlist<\/a> on Apple Music, Spotify, and Mixcloud. \u201cMy sense is that words and lyrics can be distracting\u2014the ear goes to them, especially if it\u2019s a song one knows. So, I opted for buoyant instrumentals that will create a hopeful and joyous atmosphere\u2026 and that folks can also ignore at the same time.\u201d That would imply that Byrne doesn\u2019t think many people know Post Malone\u2019s \u201cWow.,\u201d a non-instrumental song with over 1.8 billion Spotify streams that\u2019s currently on the list. The track\u2019s inclusion was almost definitely a mistake, but it\u2019s still pretty funny to imagine it popping up while Byrne\u2019s guests eat their spicy dinner. Or maybe it was a bit of subtle outreach from the musician to forge another partnership with a buzzy young star. Only Byrne knows what is the reason for it. <\/p>\n
