{"id":117835,"date":"2025-09-04T09:03:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T09:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/117835\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T09:03:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T09:03:09","slug":"fur-seal-tracking-at-barunguba-helps-collect-data-about-oceans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/117835\/","title":{"rendered":"Fur seal tracking at Barunguba helps collect data about oceans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A colony of seals on the New South Wales Far South Coast has been fitted with tracking devices as researchers work to find out more about them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Barunguba, also known as Montague Island, is based off the coast of Narooma and home to hundreds of Australian and New Zealand fur seals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a bid to learn more about their movements and the waters they live in, a group of marine scientists has glued tracking devices onto 11 New Zealand fur seals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re doing this work to find out more about the animals and the environment that they inhabit,&#8221; said Isobel Lerpiniere, project manager of the NSW Ocean Outlook Program at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can track their movements and concurrently we can collect oceanographic data.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A rocky island with a lighthouse on the high ground.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ec6ccc9f3a044b7702597d0a6af9b0a4\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Barunguba is &#8220;synonymous with seals&#8221;, according to one expert involved in the program. (Supplied: Eurobodalla Coast Tourism)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Sydney Institute of Marine Science is leading the project with support from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), the Sea World Foundation and Taronga Zoo Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The seals were netted and tagged in May, which coincided with their annual moult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The New Zealand fur seals were selected for tagging because of their range of travel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australian fur seals tend to stick closer to the coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">NSW NPWS marine vet Duane March, who assisted with the tagging process, said the seals were icons in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The island is synonymous with fur seals,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They&#8217;re very charismatic \u2014 they&#8217;re effectively wet dogs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s important to work out where these animals are living and foraging and moving so that we can protect those areas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A seal sticks its head out of the ocean.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/b2c770df4c2d895d992f0cf220423a46\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">More than 1,000 fur seals congregate at Barunguba during peak periods. (Supplied: David Rogers Photography)<\/p>\n<p>Roving dogs of the sea<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The tags will gather location, time and depth data and oceanographic information over six to 10 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We want to understand the movement patterns and the habitat use of the animals to support conservation and management as coastal ecosystems change,&#8221; Ms Lerpiniere said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;By employing seals as oceanographers, we&#8217;re simultaneously understanding how their behaviour is changing in the face of climate change so that we can better protect them into the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The tags are non-invasive and will naturally detach within a year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Seals bask together on a rock protruding from the ocean.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/d0f227264c0ea56c97b2255de4edec46\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Seals are often seen sunbathing on the rocks at Barunguba.
