When a fan tried to grab Jannik Sinner’s<\/a> bag after a US Open<\/a> match, the defending champion wasn’t just worried about losing some of his tennis equipment.<\/p>\n

“I checked straight away if he took something, because I don’t have only racquets there,” Sinner said on Thursday (AEST) after returning to the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows.<\/p>\n

“I have my phone. I have my wallet.”<\/p>\n

It was following his previous victory, in the fourth round on Tuesday (AEST), that a fan attempted to open Sinner’s bag when the 24-year-old went over to the stands to give away a towel and pose for a photograph.<\/p>\n

A member of the security staff quickly stopped the fan, and Sinner walked away from the crowd.<\/p>\n

Sinner said he’d never had something like that happen before.<\/p>\n

“But I feel like the security is doing great job. Especially on court, there are lots of security,” Sinner said.<\/p>\n

“I believe especially the big tournaments, they make an amazing job to (make us) feel safe. So even new things happen like this, they make a great job. It’s all fine.”<\/p>\n

Sinner beat fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in the quarter-finals and he will be back in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday (AEST) against No. 25 Felix Auger-Aliassime.<\/p>\n

The behaviour of tennis fans has come under the microscope in New York this week.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the tournament, Piotr Szczerek – who is the CEO of a Polish paving company – grabbed Kamil Majchrzak’s hat from a boy after his match against Karen Khachanov.<\/p>\n

Szczerek wrote on Facebook that he made a mistake thinking Majchrzak was giving him the hat for his sons, who had asked earlier for an autograph.<\/p>\n

“Regardless of what I believed was happening, the actions I took hurt the young boy and disappointed the fans,” Szczerek wrote.<\/p>\n

“I have sent the hat back to the boy and extended my sincere apologies to his family. I hope, at least to a small extent, I was able to repair the harm I caused…<\/p>\n

“It is a painful but necessary lesson in humility. Going forward, I will engage even more actively in initiatives that support children and youth, and I will take actions against violence and hate. I believe that only through actions can I rebuild the trust I have lost.
