{"id":119725,"date":"2025-09-05T02:20:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T02:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/119725\/"},"modified":"2025-09-05T02:20:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T02:20:09","slug":"democratic-republic-of-congo-declares-another-ebola-outbreak-after-15-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/119725\/","title":{"rendered":"Democratic Republic of Congo declares another Ebola outbreak after 15 deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Democratic Republic of Congo declared a new outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus on Thursday, saying there were 28 suspected cases and 15 deaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is Congo&#8217;s 15th outbreak of the virus \u2014 three years after the last one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Congo&#8217;s health ministry said samples tested on Wednesday had confirmed the presence of the Zaire strain of the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It said the initial signal for the outbreak came when a 34-year-old pregnant woman was hospitalised in Kasai province on August 20 with symptoms including high fever and vomiting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It did not say whether the woman had died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;To date, the provisional report shows 28 suspected cases and 15 deaths, including 14 in Boulap\u00e9 and one in Mweka, as well as four healthcare workers,&#8221; Congo&#8217;s Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The World Health Organization (WHO) said case numbers were likely to increase as transmission was ongoing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It will deliver two tons of supplies including mobile laboratory equipment and medical supplies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The Democratic Republic of Congo has a lot of experience in combating such outbreaks,&#8221; <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/countries\/democratic-republic-of-congo\/news\/democratic-republic-congo-declares-ebola-virus-disease-outbreak-kasai-province\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WHO regional director for Africa Mohamed Janabi said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re acting with determination to rapidly halt the spread of the virus and protect communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Banking on the country&#8217;s long-standing expertise in controlling viral disease outbreaks, we&#8217;re working closely with the health authorities to quickly scale up key response measures to end the outbreak as soon as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A health worker dressed in protective suit with a Doctors Without Borders logo on the front\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/03b29f17a521d1a63363773e170a0842\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A health worker at an Ebola treatment centre in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2019.\u00a0 (Reuters: Baz Ratner)<\/p>\n<p>What is Ebola?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ebola is a highly infectious deadly haemorrhagic fever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is officially called Ebola virus disease but is commonly referred to as simply &#8220;Ebola&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ebola was discovered in 1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks in South Sudan and Congo, where it occurred in a village near the Ebola River, after which the disease is named.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The average fatality rate for Ebola is about 50 per cent, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/ebola#tab=tab_1\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a WHO factsheet says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But it also says fatality rates have ranged from 25 per cent to 90 per cent in past outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>How does Ebola spread?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The WHO says fruit bats are thought to have been the natural host of the virus, which spreads to humans who come into contact with the bodily fluids of infected animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Human-to-human transmission is through direct contact with blood or body fluids of a person who is sick with or has died from Ebola, objects that have been contaminated with body fluids from a person sick with Ebola or the body of a person who died from Ebola,&#8221; it says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Bleeding at the sites where needles have punctured the skin can also occur.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When was Congo&#8217;s last Ebola outbreak?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Congo&#8217;s last Ebola outbreak was in 2022, in the Equateur province.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was brought under control in under three months thanks to the robust efforts of the health authorities,&#8221; the WHO said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Five people died during the 2022 outbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That death toll was in stark contrast to the devastating outbreak from 2018 to 2020, which killed nearly 2,300 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The difference between the two outbreaks was put down to a swift and &#8220;robust response&#8221; in 2020, according to <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/countries\/democratic-republic-of-congo\/news\/democratic-republic-congo-declares-14th-ebola-outbreak-over\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a WHO statement published at the time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;With greater experience in Ebola control, national emergency teams, with the support from WHO and partners, mounted a swift response soon after the outbreak was declared,&#8221;
