(Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tory&#8217;s financial situation had just started picking up when he received a letter from Centrelink in early 2017 saying he owed $7,000 in debt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He had loans to pay and the news came out of nowhere, so it &#8220;was a big thing Tory carried with him,&#8221; Ms Burdett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They were unable to appeal what she said was clearly a Centrelink error.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Then in November 2018, on what seemed like &#8220;just a normal everyday day&#8221;, Tory took his life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was ready to go to work, in his work clothes \u2026 He&#8217;d gone to McDonald&#8217;s that day,&#8221;  Ms Burdett said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A bald man in his 20s in a shirt, covered in tattoos. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/e41cdae922e74ec2209b5e0a5bc482af\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tory Burdett&#8217;s life had been looking up when he received his Robodebt notification. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not going to say he committed suicide just because of that [the debt], there&#8217;s lots of things that build up. But it was a big part.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For those higher up, seven grand may not be a lot to them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But to some people living on the edge, trying to make their next payment, or just living week to week, you might as well say it&#8217;s a hundred grand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Robodebt victims took to the &#8216;extremes&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tory was one of about 400,000 Australians affected by Robodebt, the federal government&#8217;s automated scheme that used a faulty algorithm to incorrectly demand tens of thousands of welfare recipients pay debts they did not owe.<\/p>\n<p>If you or anyone you know needs help:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The scheme ran from 2015 to 2019, pushing some of Australia&#8217;s poorest people further into debt, with many taking out loans they could not afford to make the urgent repayments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-11-17\/robodebt-victims-welcome-government-1.2-billion-settlement\/12889380\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/12889380\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A class action in 2020 resulted in a settlement that included $112 million<\/a> in compensation for victims, but did not provide compensation for associated losses, including distress and suffering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">So when a royal commission uncovered new evidence that senior public servants who designed and ran the scheme knew that it was unlawful from the start, Nathan Knox and David Mandell brought a fresh claim on behalf of victims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Unfortunately, some people took to the extremes of taking their own life as a result of these debts,&#8221; Mr Knox told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A caucasion man in his 30s in a suit smiles at the camera. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/27ed4dc00a21cd60b749a7dfefecd3f2\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Nathan Knox was a key player in the second Robodebt class action. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The 44-year-old was working two jobs and studying a diploma to become a helicopter pilot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Finding out about the debt nearly pushed him to breaking point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When shit like [Robodebt] happens, that can be the trigger, that can be the attributing factor to set people off to go into a total down spiral,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He believes two of his friends took their lives due to their Robodebt experiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Everyone was dealing with it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The compensation does little to alleviate the trauma and stress, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not be able to help my friends when I was in the same position and then they committed suicide. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For Ms Burdett, it&#8217;s not about the money, it&#8217;s about government recognition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We as family have all had times when we go, &#8216;What didn&#8217;t we do? What didn&#8217;t we see?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When does the government say: &#8216;We played a part, maybe we played a little part in that too&#8217;?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Burdett doesn&#8217;t want her son, Tory, to &#8220;just be a statistic&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She wants change in the system to ensure people on Centrelink programs are treated with more compassion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re in a computerised age, an algorithm can ruin lives,&#8221; Ms Burdett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It needs to be recognised that these things that the governments do can play a part in people&#8217;s mental health.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Cherie Burdett estimates that more than 500 people attended her son Tory&#8217;s funeral.
