The 29-year-old was “six-foot tall, bald, covered in tattoos and the most lovable boy you’d ever want to meet”, she said.<\/p>\n
“He had the biggest group of friends \u2026 Everyone adored him.<\/p>\n
“He was a good big brother to the other two kids, and he always looked after me. I was really blessed.”<\/p>\n

Tory’s financial situation had just started picking up when he received a letter from Centrelink in early 2017 saying he owed $7,000 in debt.<\/p>\n
He had loans to pay and the news came out of nowhere, so it “was a big thing Tory carried with him,” Ms Burdett said.<\/p>\n
They were unable to appeal what she said was clearly a Centrelink error.<\/p>\n
Then in November 2018, on what seemed like “just a normal everyday day”, Tory took his life.<\/p>\n
“He was ready to go to work, in his work clothes \u2026 He’d gone to McDonald’s that day,” Ms Burdett said.<\/p>\n

“I’m not going to say he committed suicide just because of that [the debt], there’s lots of things that build up. But it was a big part.<\/p>\n
“For those higher up, seven grand may not be a lot to them.<\/p>\n
“But to some people living on the edge, trying to make their next payment, or just living week to week, you might as well say it’s a hundred grand.”<\/p>\n
Robodebt victims took to the ‘extremes’\u00a0<\/p>\n
Tory was one of about 400,000 Australians affected by Robodebt, the federal government’s automated scheme that used a faulty algorithm to incorrectly demand tens of thousands of welfare recipients pay debts they did not owe.<\/p>\n

The scheme ran from 2015 to 2019, pushing some of Australia’s poorest people further into debt, with many taking out loans they could not afford to make the urgent repayments.<\/p>\n
A class action in 2020 resulted in a settlement that included $112 million<\/a> in compensation for victims, but did not provide compensation for associated losses, including distress and suffering.<\/p>\n So when a royal commission uncovered new evidence that senior public servants who designed and ran the scheme knew that it was unlawful from the start, Nathan Knox and David Mandell brought a fresh claim on behalf of victims.<\/p>\n “Unfortunately, some people took to the extremes of taking their own life as a result of these debts,” Mr Knox told the ABC.<\/p>\n Nathan Knox was a key player in the second Robodebt class action. (Supplied)<\/p>\n Mr Knox himself nearly made that choice after being chased by debt collectors to pay $15,000 back to Centrelink.<\/p>\n He was in his 20s at the time and on the JobSeeker scheme.<\/p>\n “At that point in my life, it was detrimental \u2026 It was a lot of anguish,” the now 36-year-old told the ABC.<\/p>\n “There was a moment where I could have made that split decision and I wouldn’t be here anymore.”<\/p>\n Before the 2022 election, Labor promised to establish a royal commission into Robodebt by the end of 2022. (ABC News)<\/p>\n The federal government has agreed to pay $475 million in compensation as a result of the latest class action, with legal and administrative costs taking the total to $548.5 million.<\/p>\n Robodebt class action settled for $475 million<\/a><\/p>\n Attorney-General Michelle Rowland says the payout will be the largest class action settlement in Australian history, saying it is “just and fair” to compensate victims of the unlawful debt recovery scheme.<\/p>\n Attorney-General Michelle Rowland said that when passed, it would be the largest class action settlement in Australian history.<\/p>\n Mr Knox hopes the result will help “close the chapter” for many victims.<\/p>\n “But no amount of money is probably going to be a solution to everyone’s pain and anguish,” he said.<\/p>\n “I think everyone has their own little story to tell and how that impacted them financially, economically, mental-health-wise.”<\/p>\n ‘You crash, the confusion’<\/p>\n Robert Mitchell often thinks back to when he was first issued the Centrelink debt notice in 2017.<\/p>\n “Suddenly you’ve got $5,000 owing to the government,” he told the ABC.<\/p>\n “You crash, the confusion, the instant anxiety of going, hang on, did I do something wrong?”<\/p>\n Robert Mitchell was a victim of the Robodebt scandal. (Supplied)<\/p>\n The 44-year-old was working two jobs and studying a diploma to become a helicopter pilot.<\/p>\n Finding out about the debt nearly pushed him to breaking point.<\/p>\n “When shit like [Robodebt] happens, that can be the trigger, that can be the attributing factor to set people off to go into a total down spiral,” he said.<\/p>\n He believes two of his friends took their lives due to their Robodebt experiences.<\/p>\n “Everyone was dealing with it,” he said.<\/p>\n The compensation does little to alleviate the trauma and stress, he said.<\/p>\n “Not be able to help my friends when I was in the same position and then they committed suicide. It’s really hard.”Victims’ families call for compassion<\/p>\n Peter Gordon, the founder of Gordon Legal, the firm that brought forward the class action, said the settlement was a “day of vindication and validation for hundreds of thousands of Australians afflicted by the Robodebt scandal”.<\/p>\n How we got to a Robodebt royal commission <\/a><\/p>\n Hundreds of thousands of Australians who were affected by the Robodebt scheme are hoping for answers from the former government.\u00a0<\/p>\n The firm said group members of the previous class action were likely already included but recommended that people register their interest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
