Alan Joyce, the controversial former boss of Qantas, continues to cast a shadow over the airline.<\/p>\n

The national carrier’s annual report, released on Friday, shows Mr Joyce will pick up his final bonus, a stash of shares worth $3.8 million on Friday’s market.<\/p>\n

This time last year, the national carrier announced what it deemed were serious “penalties” against the recently departed chief executive following a string of scandals involving everything from dubious ticket sales on ghost flights<\/a> to the illegal sacking of more than 1,800 workers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While the headlines proclaimed he was docked more than $9 million<\/a>, Mr Joyce departed with $14.4 million.<\/p>\n

As part of that deal, it left in place his right to participate in a long-term incentive plan for this year, while stripping him of any long-term incentives that may accrue in the next few years.<\/p>\n

Shortly before his world fell apart and Australians turned en masse against him, Mr Joyce sold the bulk of his shares in the airline in June 2023, in a sale that netted him $16.85 million.<\/p>\n

Investors join outpouring of anger<\/p>\n

With customers in revolt, workers suing their employer and the company’s reputation shredded, investors soon joined the outpouring of anger.<\/p>\n

Rather than applauding the so-called $9 million penalty, they voted overwhelmingly to reject the $14.4 million he was being paid.<\/p>\n

At the company’s annual general meeting, 83 per cent voted against Qantas’s executive remuneration scheme, one of the most resounding votes in history.<\/p>\n

Mr Joyce’s former offsider, Vanessa Hudson, now faced with the difficult task of resurrecting the airline as his replacement, hasn’t fared quite so well as Joyce on the pay front.<\/p>\n

She will take home about $6.3 million this year, well short of Mr Joyce’s 2018 record when he trousered $23.9 million.<\/p>\n

While there may be some shareholder disquiet that penalties have not been imposed as a result of the massive data breach of the company’s frequent flyer program, Ms Hudson has delivered some early impressive results.<\/p>\n

The share price has doubled and now sits just below record highs at $11.78; she has instigated a much-needed overhaul of the fleet with the purchase of new aircraft \u2014 following a decade-long investment drought \u2014 and delivered a better-than-expected earnings result a fortnight ago.<\/p>\n
