Portland\u2019s bid to secure a Major League Baseball franchise is gaining momentum, with renders revealing a 32,000\u2011seat timber\u2011and\u2011glass stadium planned for the city\u2019s South Waterfront. Designed by Jeff Yrazabal of Populous \u2014 the architect behind the Reser Stadium renovation and Hayward Field \u2014 the proposed ballpark would sit between the Ross Island Bridge and Tillikum Crossing. Wood Central understands that the design features a translucent retractable roof and a superstructure built from Oregon-sourced engineered timber, paired with sweeping glass walls that showcase the state\u2019s forestry expertise on a national stage.<\/p>\n

Backers say the venue would be a \u201ccivic asset 365 days a year\u201d and one of the most iconic backdrops in professional sports. \u201cWe believe this is an iconic site,\u201d said Craig Cheek, founder and president of the Portland Diamond Project.<\/a> \u201cIf you think about the current 30 stadiums in the country, there may not be a better backdrop.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 33\u2011acre Zidell Yards site has been central to the Diamond Project\u2019s pitch. Portland Mayor Keith Wilson has thrown his support behind the plan, saying, \u201cWe need a project like this and we need a project like this now,\u201d and confirming the city is \u201cactively partnering with (the Diamond Project) to build a complete and compelling package for the MLB.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The Portland Diamond Project wants to build a $2B timber\u2011and\u2011glass ballpark before even landing a team. Blending Oregon\u2011sourced timber, sweeping glass walls, and the city\u2019s offbeat spirit, it\u2019s a design unlike anything in baseball \u2014 and a high\u2011stakes bet that\u2019s stirring both excitement and controversy. That package now has a major financial pillar in place. In late June, Governor Tina Kotek signed Senate Bill 110 into law<\/a>, authorising $800 million in state\u2011issued bonds to help fund the stadium. The bonds will be repaid through income taxes on players and staff, with the team and private investors covering the remainder of the estimated $2 billion cost.<\/p>\n

\u201cOverwhelmingly passing SB 110 is more than securing funding support for a professional baseball stadium \u2014 this bill shows Major League Baseball Oregon is excited about America\u2019s pastime,\u201d Cheek said after the signing. Supporters, including Sen. Mark Meek, D\u2011Gladstone, say the project would create jobs, attract fans, and inject long\u2011term investment into Portland\u2019s economy. \u201cWith SB 110, we\u2019re ready to compete, think big, and deliver,\u201d Meek said.<\/p>\n

Critics, however, question whether the financing will work as planned. John Calhoun of Tax Fairness Oregon argued the stadium would still impact state revenue. \u201cIt is not free money,\u201d he said. \u201cEconomic denialism is an issue just like climate denialism is an issue. But that\u2019s the way it is. And the legislators were enthusiastic about having a stadium, so that\u2019s what they voted for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Portland remains in competition with other cities, including Salt Lake City, for an MLB expansion franchise. The Diamond Project aims to break ground as early as 2027, pending a team award, with Cheek promising a forthcoming announcement regarding the project\u2019s financial backers.<\/p>\n
