S\ufeffydney Sweeney made headlines back in July for a controversial brand endorsement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Euphoria actress was the star of American Eagle’s latest \ufeffdenim campaign<\/a> with the catchphrase “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans”.<\/p>\n

The advertisement received a slew of backlash as viewers interpreted it to be promoting eugenics, and now Sweeney, 27, has broken her silence on the \ufeffcontroversy.<\/p>\n

In a new interview with Vanity Fair<\/a> ahead of her appearance at \ufeffToronto International Film Festival to promote her upcoming film Christy \u2013 a biopic on boxer Christy Martin \u2013 Sweeney told Vanity Fair that she has no intentions on answering questions about the advertisement.<\/p>\n

“I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I’m not there to talk about jeans,” she told the publication.<\/p>\n

“The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about.”<\/p>\n

The advertisement started off with Sweeney telling viewers\ufeff, “I’m not here to tell you to buy American Eagle jeans,” as she leans forward in her chair, with the camera lingering on her chest.<\/p>\n

As she walks away, the camera stays at the same height, staying on her bottom as she walks over to a mirror and says, “And I definitely won’t say they’re the most comfortable jeans I’ve ever worn, or that they make your butt look amazing.”<\/p>\n

She continues to insist she’s not trying to sell you jeans, before the words, \ufeff”Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” flash on the screen, with the actress quipping, “See what I did there, right?”<\/p>\n

Shortly after the campaign’s release, \ufeffAmerican Eagle responded to the backlash with a post shared to Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans,” the statement read.<\/p>\n

“Her jeans. Her story.\ufeff”<\/p>\n

The statement continued on to explain that the brand would “\ufeffcontinue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way.<\/p>\n

“Great jeans look good on everyone.”\ufeff<\/p>\n

The statement was posted with a navy graphic to the brand’s official Instagram account which boasts 3.7 million followers.<\/p>\n
