{"id":121567,"date":"2025-09-05T20:57:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T20:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/121567\/"},"modified":"2025-09-05T20:57:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T20:57:10","slug":"spring-outlook-positive-for-east-coast-farmers-but-some-still-struggling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/121567\/","title":{"rendered":"Spring outlook positive for east coast farmers, but some still struggling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A bumper spring is expected for livestock producers, and grain growers are anticipating the nation&#8217;s third-largest crop on record, ahead of above-average rainfall forecast for parts of Australia over the next few months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences&#8217; (ABARES) latest agricultural commodities report <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-02\/abares-australian-agriculture-value-record-101-billion-farming\/105724064\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105724064\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">estimates the national grain crop will reach 62 million tonnes<\/a> this financial year, including a wheat crop approaching 34 million tonnes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;After a very unfavourable start to the winter season, particularly in South Australia and parts of southern NSW, we&#8217;ve had some fairly good rainfall \u2026 which has really helped that area start to drive on,&#8221; ABARES executive director Jared Greenville said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rolling hills of yellow canola plant, with one large tree in foreground.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/37c0c9656d3d714a0445b730b3377961\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Canola crops in parts of central-west NSW are in bloom after plenty of winter rain.\u00a0 (ABC Central West: Emily Middleton)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">ABARES is forecasting the value of Australian agriculture will be $94.7 billion in 2025-26, due to record lamb prices and beef exports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The figure is close to the National Farmers&#8217; Federation&#8217;s (NFF) goal of growing the industry&#8217;s value to $100 billion by 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s great news to see agriculture doing so well in the challenges of drought in the south-east, but then also acknowledging that there&#8217;s absolutely been huge challenges with the amount of water in the north,&#8221; NFF president David Jochinke said.<\/p>\n<p>Spring looks promising<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Bureau of Meteorology senior climatologist Felicity Gamble said while some parts of NSW had recorded their wettest year to date on record, the southern region had been mostly dry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, looking ahead, she said the outlook for spring was promising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The BOM has forecast a more than 80 per cent chance of above-average rainfall for much of eastern Australia over the next few months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s really good news for the southern parts of NSW, and extending into western Victoria [and] parts of south-east South Australia,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"spring outlook - map\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/378323153a53648cb3a1d203a53412f8\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Rainfall is likely to be above average for most of the eastern half of Australia.
