(Supplied: Samantha Happ\u00e9)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said the striking nature of Chevalier&#8217;s Mount Abrupt is due to the romantic tradition of painting in which he was working.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The German and Russian Romantics believed in the power of the landscape and the emotions that a landscape can create,&#8221;  Dr Happ\u00e9 said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The style was very scientific and technical. (Supplied: Hamilton Gallery)<\/p>\n<p>Painting to planting<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The specificity of Chevalier&#8217;s work has been invaluable to the replanting efforts undertaken by The Friends of the Forgotten Woodlands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The paintings show quite clearly what species was growing in that spot \u2014 you&#8217;ve got artistic licence and all that to consider, but it does give a bit of a picture,&#8221; Mr Weatherly said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It validated perhaps what we were trying to do \u2014 getting the trees back in the landscape.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The landscape has changed significantly in the past 160 years, with different types of plants and trees becoming more prominent than the colourful banksia, she-oak, and bursaria trees featured in Chevalier&#8217;s painting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A green field with some large trees and some saplings with protective stakes around plastic around them.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/db63f853c87e5ef5b629df85d222ccef\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The revegetation project is using the 1864 oil painting as a guide to which native species used to grow in the area. It just stands over us.
