{"id":122112,"date":"2025-09-06T02:00:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-06T02:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/122112\/"},"modified":"2025-09-06T02:00:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-06T02:00:08","slug":"space-forces-x-37b-space-plane-is-testing-zylon-material-to-help-crew-and-cargo-land-on-mars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/122112\/","title":{"rendered":"Space Force&#8217;s X-37B space plane is testing &#8216;Zylon&#8217; material to help crew and cargo land on Mars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"c52c013d-83bc-4b39-a1aa-043a58b20257\">The U.S. Space Force&#8217;s X-37B space plane is carrying a sample of material that could some day help NASA land cargo and crew on Mars.<\/p>\n<p>The X-37B <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-launches-space-forces-x-37b-space-plane-on-8th-mystery-mission\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-launches-space-forces-x-37b-space-plane-on-8th-mystery-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched on its eighth mission<\/a> on Aug. 21 atop a SpaceX <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon 9<\/a> rocket from NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kennedy Space Center<\/a> (KSC) in Florida. Aboard the space plane were a number of experiments, including a laser communications system and the &#8220;highest-performing quantum inertial sensor ever tested in space,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceforce.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/4256759\/us-space-force-scheduled-to-launch-eighth-x-37b-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spaceforce.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/4256759\/us-space-force-scheduled-to-launch-eighth-x-37b-mission\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to the U.S. Space Force<\/a>. The sensor is a much more precise and resilient alternative to GPS that could allow spacecraft to determine their position even in GPS-denied environments.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"c52c013d-83bc-4b39-a1aa-043a58b20257-2\">But while these two emerging technologies got most of the attention, the X-37B was carrying another potentially revolutionary experiment. Aboard the secretive space plane was a strip of webbing known as Zylon, a strong synthetic polymer <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sri.com\/press\/story\/75-years-of-innovation-synthetic-polymer-zylon\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.sri.com\/press\/story\/75-years-of-innovation-synthetic-polymer-zylon\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">developed by SRI International.<\/a> Zylon webbing is being eyed to construct straps for NASA&#8217;s Hypersonic Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (HIAD), a flying-saucer aeroshell that could someday be used to land crew and cargo on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"811c8a81-7332-4ad2-ae5e-ed3c8ea631e0\">With NASA&#8217;s current push for a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/nasa-administrator-says-the-agency-will-move-aside-from-climate-sciences-to-focus-on-exploring-moon-and-mars\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/nasa-administrator-says-the-agency-will-move-aside-from-climate-sciences-to-focus-on-exploring-moon-and-mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">greater emphasis on exploration of the moon and Mars<\/a>, technologies like HIAD could become vital to the agency&#8217;s plans \u200a\u2014 as could the need for materials to ensure they work as designed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re researching how HIAD technology could help get humans to Mars. (Image credit: NASA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"e6c5645e-32ee-458a-a0c0-1ca303ba6b6f\">Aeroshells like HIAD could someday help large spacecraft, rovers or other equipment descend through the atmospheres of planets or moons like Saturn&#8217;s giant satellite <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15257-titan-saturn-largest-moon-facts-discovery-sdcmp.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15257-titan-saturn-largest-moon-facts-discovery-sdcmp.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Titan<\/a>, according to NASA. That&#8217;s were materials like Zylon come in.<\/p>\n<p>Zylon is being eyed for use in the straps that hold the HIAD shell together and distribute loads evenly throughout its structure. But scientists will need to know how the material reacts to the harsh environment of long-term spaceflight before NASA sends it on the journey to Mars or beyond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>To that end, the X-37B is carrying multiple samples of Zylon in canisters, some of which are embedded with temperature and humidity sensors. (Image credit: NASA\/Joe Atkinson)<\/p>\n<p id=\"4b56446f-2bd8-4074-ab2a-ef6ade00284a\">The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/x-37b-military-space-plane-surprising-facts\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/x-37b-military-space-plane-surprising-facts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">X-37B<\/a> is a reusable space plane that allows scientists the opportunity to send materials and other experiments to space and then study them upon their return to Earth.
