{"id":122615,"date":"2025-09-06T07:11:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-06T07:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/122615\/"},"modified":"2025-09-06T07:11:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-06T07:11:09","slug":"mlb-admits-what-yankees-suspected-umps-botched-catch-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/122615\/","title":{"rendered":"MLB admits what Yankees suspected: Umps botched catch call"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Yankees learned what they pretty much already knew: Ryan McMahon caught Jose Altuve\u2019s line drive in the sixth inning of their win in Houston on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Boone said Friday he heard from MLB that the play should have been ruled an out when third base umpire Brian Walsh \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/04\/sports\/yankees-endure-another-blown-call-by-same-umpire-after-his-home-plate-flubs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who had a mistake-filled series in Houston<\/a> \u2014 ruled that McMahon didn\u2019t hang on to the ball despite it clearly coming out on the transfer out of the glove.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Boone said it \u201cshould have been ruled a catch\u201d by the league.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McMahon, who was back at third base for the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/05\/sports\/cam-schlittlers-untimely-clunker-sinks-yankees-vs-big-blue-jays\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">series-opening loss to the Blue Jays<\/a> on Friday in The Bronx, said he was only concerned about the result of the game and the victory made it easier to put the play behind him. He also added that he didn\u2019t blame Walsh \u2014 who was also brutal behind the plate in the Yankees\u2019 loss to the Astros on Wednesday \u2014 for the missed call at third.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ryan McMahon pled his case \u2014 that he caught the ball and lost it on the transfer \u2014 to no avail. YES<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw the replay, and in real time, from his angle, I understand how he didn\u2019t see it,\u201d McMahon said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That wasn\u2019t the only controversy MLB weighed in on Friday regarding Thursday\u2019s game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It turns out the Yankees were right that the bat Taylor Trammell used during the game <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/05\/sports\/mlb-makes-quick-ruling-on-taylor-trammell-illegal-bat-controversy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">did not meet MLB regulations<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But unlike other controversies involving the Astros, there will be no repercussions following the bat\u2019s removal from the game, according to a source, since it was ruled Trammell did not gain an advantage from the bat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to MLB guidelines, any two-color bat must be divided into two sections, one of each color. AP<\/p>\n<p>During Trammell\u2019s at-bat in the bottom of the ninth against David Bednar, the Yankees noted there was \u201cdiscoloration on the label\u201d of Trammell\u2019s bat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After a lengthy delay, in which crew chief Adrian Johnson spoke to the replay center in New York, the umpire handed the bat to an official authenticator and the game resumed with no other consequences.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The bat, according to a source, was \u201ccorrectly treated\u201d in the same way an impermissible glove color or design would be and notified the player he was no longer permitted to use the bat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The crew chose to keep the bat and have it shipped to MLB headquarters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Boone was almost apologetic about questioning Trammell\u2019s bat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Home plate umpire Adrian Johnson, left, holds Houston Astros\u2019 Taylor Trammell\u2019s bat as he, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone, center, and Ramon De Jesus, right, discussed the scuff on it during the ninth inning on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025, in Houston. AP<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was something hard for me to do because I don\u2019t think Taylor was up to anything,\u2019\u2019 Boone said of Trammell, who played five games with the Yankees last season and spent much of the season with the organization at Triple-A Scranton\/Wilkes-Barre.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it was brought to my attention,\u2019\u2019 Boone said. \u201cSomething looked not right and not within the rules. I was satisfied with the ruling and explanation.
