The multi-university partnership, known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/news\/nsf-national-quantum-virtual-laboratory-advances\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Quantum Virtual Laboratory (NQVL)<\/a>, aims to design a quantum supercomputer with broad scientific and educational access.<\/p>\n<p>The QACTI project is now entering its second phase with two primary targets: building a 60-qubit \u201cproof of concept\u201d machine by 2029 and a 256-qubit ion trap computer by 2033. <a href=\"https:\/\/cs.uchicago.edu\/people\/frederic-chong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Fred Chong<\/a>, a professor at the University of Chicago and co-principal investigator for the project, noted that the grant provides an opportunity to develop an open quantum platform for science applications. The project\u2019s vision is to democratize access to advanced quantum hardware by making it available locally and via the cloud, to users across the country.<\/p>\n<p>This initiative is a collaboration with researchers at <a href=\"https:\/\/duke.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Duke<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tufts.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Tufts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">North Carolina State<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncat.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University<\/a>. The project also emphasizes training the next generation of quantum scientists, engaging students, postdoctoral researchers, and professionals from diverse backgrounds. The NSF\u2019s phased investment in QACTI is positioned as a national commitment to building quantum infrastructure.
