he says.

The number of men living with eating disorders is on the rise

More than a third of those living with eating disorders in Australia are male, with boys aged 15-19 years old the most affected.

That number is rising, according to eating disorder charity the Butterfly Foundation.

Their recent Paying the Price report found the number of men impacted by eating disorders has grown by almost 33,000 since 2012.

Melissa Wilton, the Butterfly Foundation’s Head of Communications and Engagement, says the conversation about eating disorders is still “10 years behind that of anxiety and depression”.

“When it comes to men and boys, extreme exercising and muscle growth are often celebrated and seen as healthy due to traditional ideals around masculinity and sporting prowess,” she says.

“This can contribute to a desire to be more muscular and result in body dissatisfaction, which is a significant risk factor in developing an eating disorder.”

The actual number of men affected by eating disorders, she adds, may be much higher.

“Their experiences may be overlooked or misdiagnosed by clinicians,” she says.

“Men and boys are also particularly impacted by stigma, as eating disorders are still often seen as an issue that only impacts young women, which can reduce help-seeking.

“Men are four times more likely to live with an undiagnosed eating disorder.”The snowball effect and the ‘woodpecker’ in the brain

Tim had been diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder at around eight years old, after confessing to his parents about recurring intrusive thoughts.

An axe murderer was going to come and kill him, he told them.

“Which is a wild thing for an eight-year-old to visualise,” he says.

“I did a lot of [cognitive behavioural therapy] with the child psychologist around the axe murderer.

“From there, there was a lot of intrusive thoughts, compulsions and things. My OCD has really taken on different themes over the years.”

Anxiety around sexuality, health, contamination and paedophilia followed, like a “woodpecker” in his brain.

Years later, a friend hired a photographer for their joint 21st birthday party — the photos, Tim says, sparked a new obsession.

“I’ve always been pretty self-conscious, not a whole lot of confidence around myself. From there I just became more obsessed with the way I looked, what I was eating.

“A lot of men rip into each other and get stuck into each other … so I was targeted by my mates for my weight.

“When you’re already so self-aware about something, and you’re getting teased about it … you just become more and more obsessed.”

“And then all of a sudden I’m doing things that are obviously not healthy and it just snowballs. It got to a point where I knew this wasn’t good for me.

“But the intrusive thoughts were like, ‘if you don’t do this now, you’re never going to have a girlfriend. You’re never going to have kids and get married.”

Before long, he couldn’t hide what was going on anymore.

Stereotypes about ‘insidious’ eating disorders persist

The number of people impacted by eating disorders has increased by 21 per cent since 2012, and experts say the age of onset is dropping.

The COVID-19 pandemic also sparked a surge in demand for eating disorder services.

Promotion of weight-loss drugs has experts worried

As elite athletes, celebrities and influencers sign on to sell weight-loss drugs, experts say our obsession with losing weight is getting more and more dangerous.

But not fitting the “stereotypical” image of someone with an eating disorder, according to the Butterfly Foundation, can stop people seeking help.

Butterfly’s chief executive Jim Hungerford says it’s a matter for urgent attention.

“Every year, approximately 120,000 people develop an eating disorder and sadly, 1,200 people lose their lives to these insidious illnesses,” he says.

“We urgently need to spread awareness about the factors that can contribute to eating disorder development, to stop this crisis from escalating and ensuring more people can access the person-centred care they need.”

Possibly as many as 97 per cent of people diagnosed with an eating disorder also receive a diagnosis for at least one more psychiatric disorder.

The most common co-diagnoses are depression, anxiety, PTSD and trauma, substance use disorders, personality disorders and suicidal ideation.

Men with OCD, like Tim, are 37 times more likely to develop anorexia nervosa than the general population.

Part of the problem, says Melissa Wilton, is a society where “our worth is tied to our weight”.

“Butterfly’s recent Community Insights Survey found nine in 10 people in Australia are not confident in spotting the signs of an eating disorder,” she says.

“And almost one in six believe eating disorders are a lifestyle choice or about vanity.”

“This couldn’t be further from the truth – an eating disorder is a severe, psychological illness with one of the highest mortality rates.”

Loading…

She says more men need to talk about their experience with disordered eating.

“We know that talking helps and is key in breaking down stigma and encouraging help-seeking,” she says.

“Eating disorders are not ‘women’s issues’ and breaking down this misconception may allow more men to feel comfortable to also reach out for help.”

The ‘light-bulb moment’ that led to recovery

Returning to Australia, Tim was in and out of treatment programs multiple times, and admits a part of him still wasn’t taking recovery seriously and had accepted there wasn’t much hope of recovering.

Looking around, he was the only man in treatment.

Recovery, he says, is “lonely in itself”, but not having anyone around who looked like him gave him an “added bit of loneliness”.

Finally, things came to a head with his family when his sister-in-law, a nurse, staged an intervention.

Tim’s now sharing his experiences with recovery to encourage more men to seek help. (Supplied)

Their plan for him was simple: commit to getting help, or be sent to an inpatient facility that he could not leave without completing the program.

It was a “light-bulb moment”, for Tim.

“I was like, ‘look, all my friends are getting married, settling down,'”
