Defeats to Canberra and the Broncos \u2013 despite leading in the second halves \u2013 came back to bite them, as did a pair of losses to wooden spooners Newcastle.<\/p>\n
But according to Woolf, the 64-12 round 23 loss to the Roosters \u2013 after winning 10 of 15 games \u2013 proved the straw which broke them, with a further 96 points following in their next two losses.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you look from round five to round 22 we were exactly what we wanted to be. We know we can find points, we were defending points, and we were playing to our potential,\u201d Woolf said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t have a clear-cut reason, but there\u2019s no doubt our defence fell away. To finish ninth and score more points than any team in the competition, it\u2019s outstanding for us and our attack, but we know we need to be better defensively.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s what we\u2019ve had to build on for the last three years to be fair, and when we find that we\u2019ll start to see what we\u2019re capable of.\u201d<\/p>\n

How injury carnage hurt them, but set up future<\/p>\n
Injuries ultimately ravaged the Dolphins, but presented a silver lining.<\/p>\n
Marquee prop Thomas Flegler never returned from nerve damage suffered in his shoulder last year, while Tom Gilbert (pectoral), Max Plath (ACL) and Daniel Saifiti (shoulder) missed most of the campaign.<\/p>\n
Outside backs Jack Bostock (ACL) and Herbie Farnworth (hamstring) failed to finish the year, while Kulikefu Finefieuaki and Connelly Lemuelu were sidelined for extended periods.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had lots of disruption, but I still think we could have handled that a little bit better than we did, and that\u2019s what we need to find,\u201d Woolf said.<\/p>\n
But the carnage helped offset an area which had cruelled the Dolphins\u2019 past two campaigns: build their depth.<\/p>\n
Rookie winger Tevita Naufahu, who crossed twice in Sunday\u2019s win and ran for 247 metres, starred in Bostock\u2019s absence, while fullback Trai Fuller (232 metres, two try assists, two linebreaks, three linebreak assists) has dazzled four games into his comeback from a ruptured ACL.<\/p>\n

Kurt Donoghoe was also illustrious stepping into Plath\u2019s courageous, ball-playing lock role \u2013 averaging 92.5 running metres and 41 tackles a game in the No.13 jumper.<\/p>\n
Woolf confirmed that while Gilbert, Saifiti and Flegler were hopeful round one returns in 2026, Plath and Bostock would take more time to get back onto the field as recruits Morgan Knowles, Selwyn Cobbo and Brad Schneider prepare to arrive.<\/p>\n
Nicholls, meanwhile, delivered a message to the emerging Redcliffe crop – which includes their under-20s, who went through the inaugural competition between the Queensland clubs undefeated – which Naufahu especially took on board.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve noticed as an older bloke in the last three years the guys who have good preseasons go on and have pretty good years, and Tevita was someone who really stood out,\u201d Nicholls said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was competing on everything, and he just looked like a first-grader. Kurt did that, Plathy was unreal in that preseason, so the message I gave on the first day of preseason is if you rip in as a young fella you never know what might happen.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll those young guys who could play this year because of the injuries we had, they\u2019ll all be better for it, and all those guys who were injured will come back.<\/p>\n
