(Reuters: Matteo Minnella)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, the Pope&#8217;s death on Easter Monday and the subsequent mourning and conclave periods delayed the proceedings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On June 13, Pope Leo announced that Saint Carlo, along with young Catholic author Pier Giorgio Frassati, would be the first saints named in his pontificate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Saint Carlo, who is known as the &#8220;saint in sneakers&#8221;, has been touted as the patron saint of the internet for his work cataloguing miracles and evangelising online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">And with Catholicism <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-23\/the-changing-face-of-catholicism-in-australia\/104967032\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on the decline<\/a> in many countries, including Australia, some are hoping a relatable saint will help galvanise the next generation of Catholic youth.<\/p>\n<p>Who was Carlo Acutis?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Born in London in 1991 but raised in Milan, Saint Carlo loved gaming, computer programming, soccer, Pok\u00e9mon, and his dog Billy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While neither of his parents were religious before he was born, he identified as a devout Catholic from an early age and devoted his life to sharing his love of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He was particularly passionate about Eucharistic miracles: supernatural events involving consecrated bread and wine as the literal body and blood of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At 11 years old, he created an interactive <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miracolieucaristici.org\/en\/en_map.html\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a> cataloguing these miracles around the world. (Carloacutis.com)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While he loved his PlayStation, he limited himself to playing just one hour a week to ensure his focus remained on God.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Father David Ransom, the parish priest at Our Lady of Dolours church in Sydney, which displays a relic of Saint Carlo&#8217;s \u2014 two of his hairs \u2014 in a shrine, says in many ways he was an &#8220;ordinary young man&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But he was a very passionate young man, full of life,&#8221; he tells <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/programs\/soul-search\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ABC Radio National&#8217;s Soul Search.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;He had a great vitality about him \u2026 For a young man, it was a very full life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In October 2006, the 15-year-old developed pain in his throat and quickly became seriously ill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Soon after, he was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, a rare and aggressive blood cancer, and died within a week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It was his wish to be buried in the central Italian town of Assisi, the birthplace of the highly venerated 13th-century Catholic friar, Saint Francis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Acutis identified with Saint Francis&#8217; values of poverty, chastity and obedience, as well as his patronage of animals and the environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This admiration was shared by the late Pope Francis, who took his papal name in honour of the same saint.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A Rennaissance painting of a man in a friar's cassock with his eyes turned heavenward, with cherubs floating above.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/73c70092208ff9c77bfee16b138d3fc9\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Saint Francis of Assisi was an Italian mystic, poet and friar who founded the religious order of the Franciscans. (WikiMedia Commons: Public Domain)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Followers of Saint Francis were historically &#8220;not afraid to get their hands dirty&#8221;, explains Joanne Pierce, professor emerita in the department of religious studies at the College of the Holy Cross.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They were very willing to help out \u2026 They were doers, but they spread the message, and I think that&#8217;s one of the things that Carlo Acutis was so devoted to,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Carlo gave out sleeping bags to the homeless, he would give the poor money from his own allowance. (Getty: Vatican Pool)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After the beatification ceremony, Saint Carlo&#8217;s relics and tomb were opened to the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The young saint&#8217;s body was encased in wax to preserve his likeness, and he was laid to rest in jeans, a jacket and Nike sneakers. (YouTube)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Father Ransom says the young saint demonstrated that &#8220;holiness is not something only reserved for the past&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;He&#8217;s such a wonderful example to young people that even as children or adolescents, it&#8217;s possible to draw close to God and to have a heart that&#8217;s open to something transcendent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;God&#8217;s influencer&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Saint Carlo is not the first patron saint of the internet.
