Hall of Famer and \u201cInside the NBA\u201d analyst Charles Barkley praised Los Angeles Lakers<\/a> star LeBron James<\/a> as one of the greatest players in basketball history, but singled out what he dislikes most about the ongoing debate over James\u2019 legacy.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s the only thing I hate about LeBron,\u201d Barkley said recently on \u201cThe Bill Simmons\u201d<\/a> Podcast. \u201cFirst of all, he\u2019s a great, great player. He\u2019s an amazing person, really nice guy. But for him and his guys, if you don\u2019t say he\u2019s the greatest ever, it\u2019s like you committing treason. \u2026They\u2019re like, if you don\u2019t say he\u2019s the greatest thing since sliced bread, they hate you. And it\u2019s really sad.\u201d<\/p>\n Nike Commercial Sparks Controversy<\/p>\n The remarks come as James drew renewed attention following a new Nike commercial that dubbed him the \u201cForever King.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThey called him the Chosen One,\u201d the ad begins. \u201cHe carried the weight of every expectation on his shoulders, but he never broke. We were all witnesses. Every rival was defeated. Every idol was destroyed. He took the crown and kept it. Behold the greatness, he is the Forever King.\u201d<\/p>\n The commercial sparked mixed reactions. Bleacher Report writer Andy Bailey called<\/a> it \u201cone of the wildest ads you will ever see,\u201d while some fans criticized the line \u201cevery idol was destroyed,\u201d pointing to James\u2019 losses to Stephen Curr<\/a>y and the Golden State Warriors in three NBA Finals, two of those with Kevin Durant<\/a> and his earlier losses to Dirk Nowitzki and Tim Duncan and a young Kawhi Leonard<\/a>.<\/p>\n Career Longevity Bolsters GOAT Case<\/p>\n Despite those losses, James led the greatest comeback in Finals history in 2016, overcoming a 3\u20131 deficit against the Warriors \u2014 a series that preceded their acquisition of Durant.<\/p>\n James\u2019 longevity and consistent excellence continue to bolster his case in the \u201cgreatest of all time\u201d discussion. He is the NBA\u2019s all-time scoring leader, holds the record for most All-Star appearances and All-NBA selections with 21, and has won four NBA championships along with four Finals MVPs.<\/p>\n At age 40, James averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds last season, receiving more MVP votes than Curry, James Harden<\/a>, and much younger stars Anthony Edwards<\/a> and Jalen Brunson<\/a>.<\/p>\n Offseason Controversy and Cryptic Messages<\/p>\n The Lakers star\u2019s offseason has included some controversy.<\/p>\n James\u2019 agent, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, sparked trade speculation after the star picked up his $52.6 million player option with no contract extension offered by the Lakers.<\/p>\n \u201cLeBron wants to compete for a championship,\u201d Paul told ESPN in June<\/a>. \u201cHe knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we\u2019ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.\u201d<\/p>\n While Paul dismissed trade rumors later, James himself posted a cryptic message on Instagram in late July:<\/p>\n \u201cSay whatever you want, but you damn sure won\u2019t be able to say I didn\u2019t put in the WORK!! \ud83d\udc51. We\u2019ll see what happens when I no longer exist. Man, F this Shhhhhh,\u201d he wrote alongside photos from his early offseason workouts.<\/p>\n As James prepares to enter his 21st NBA season, questions about his legacy and desire for another championship continue to swirl.
